Another excellent chapter of Hiroshi's saga
Reviewed: 01-02-25
Another clever and engaging story of detective Hiroshi, this time dealing with the corrupt schemes of a shady financial services company in Tokyo. The book has a smart plot ,great characters and gives us an immersion of the Japanese style of life and of Tokyo. It is unduly complex in the first quarter trying to explain the complex mechanisms underlying some financial transactions , but otherwise the story flows well and capture your interest.
I would like that more insight is given to detective Hiroshi's private life and his relations with family/his life partner which find truly captivating.
All in all , a great ride !

Story

It is difficult to explain the sense of the story described by William Boyd as it is impossible to attribute a genre to this book. It is not quite a spy story. It is an intimate biography , but not too much ... it borders a love story , but definitively it is not one.
This absence of "meaning" bothers at times the reader that at time wonders "what is all this about", but the book is well written , with interesting characters and a sharp an captivating atmosphere of the late 50s early 60s..
All in all , I enjoyed the ride

Simenon is a great writer , but the plot of the book is thin and the two main characters uninspiring. Finished the book for both sense of duty and respect for the writer. Next time i'll pick a Maigret ...

After the violence of Kristallnacht (1938), European Jews, now desperate to emigrate, found the consular doors of the world closed to them. Only one port required no entry visa: Shanghai, a self-governing Western trading enclave in what was technically Chinese territory, a political anomaly that became an escape hatch—if you were lucky enough to afford a ticket on one of the great Lloyd liners sailing to the East and safety.
