Story
In 2018, two couples set out on a climbing expedition to Alaska’s Hidden Mountains, one of the last wild ranges in North America. A rarity in modern climbing, the peaks were nearly unexplored and untouched, a place where few people had ever visited and granite spires still awaited first ascents. Inspired by generations of daring alpinists before them, the four climbers were now compelled to strike out into uncharted territory themselves.

It stays interesting from start to finish, alternating between the specific storyline about a climbing accident and the lives of the main characters. Well researched and presented.

Story
If you don’t understand communist revolutions, you aren’t ready for what’s coming. The old rules are over. The old order is over. Accusations are evidence. Activism means bigotry and hate. Criminals are allowed to roam free. Citizens are locked up. An appetite for vengeance is unleashed—to deplatform, debank, destroy. This is the daily news, yet none of it’s new. Patterns from the past make sense of our present. They also foretell a terrifying future we might be condemned to endure.

Decent takedown of woke progressivism. Should have had one more chapter on the current policy platform, linking specific items to the historical analogues. This link was implied but not elucidated.

When Andy Ngo was attacked in the streets by antifa in the summer of 2019, most people assumed it was an isolated incident. But those who'd been following Ngo's reporting in outlets like the New York Post and Quillette knew that the attack was only the latest in a long line of crimes perpetrated by antifa.

Informative account of the history of America’s most successful domestic extremist group. Probably longer than it needed to be but the afterword was the best chapter. I’d recommend skipping to it for anyone losing interest in the middle.

Applying training practices from other endurance sports, House and Johnston demonstrate that following a carefully designed regimen is as effective for alpinism as it is for any other endurance sport and leads to better performance. They deliver detailed instruction on how to plan and execute training tailored to your individual circumstances.

The authors did a great job, bouncing between technical descriptions of training regimens and the logic behind them, and climbing stories, with lots of guest essays. I learned a lot and tended to agree with the opinions shared.
The narrator isn’t a climber which caused a number of confusing/amusing mispronunciations (“five point one three” for 5.13, “W-sixteen” for WI6, “Colon” Haley).

Story
Richard Hanania has come out of nowhere to become one of the best-known writers in the nation in the last few years. In this book, he directs his attention to the culture war that has driven society apart and presents a stunning new theory about what is going on. In a nation nearly evenly split between conservatives and liberals, the left dominates nearly all major institutions, including universities, the government, and corporate America. Hanania argues that this is as much a legal requirement as it is an issue of one side triumphing in the marketplace of ideas.

Good coverage of the legal history and corporate response. Doesn’t cover at all the academic origins and doesn’t address how such a wildly internally conflicted and destructive set of principles became mainstream.

Story
In this characteristically turbocharged new book, celebrated Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi provides an insider's guide to the variety of ways today's mainstream media tells us lies. In the internet age, the press have mastered the art of monetizing anger, paranoia, and distrust. Taibbi, who has spent much of his career covering elections in which this kind of manipulative activity is most egregious, provides a rich taxonomic survey of American political journalism's dirty tricks.

He should have narrated it himself—the narrator’s tone was serious, not irreverent (which is Taibbi’sbrand).
Interesting stories, lots of stuff I didn’t know, but in the end I don’t see a coherent thesis about why the media pushes hate, or a path forward.

And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions. But in 2019, as some claimed "billions of people are going to die", contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.
