Story
Sometimes, the best choice might be the one that leaves you vulnerable. The one that forces you to face a past that hurts or go through with something you never thought would come to fruition. The one that makes taking a risk your only option. Wilhelmina "Wil" Cunningham is no stranger to pressure. The child of an Olympian and a boxer, and a former Olympian herself, Wil has gained an "America’s sweetheart" reputation—a high pedestal to fall from when her world gets rocked by betrayal and deceit.

Story
Powerless witch Saika is ready to enact her sister's final request: to plant her remains at the famed Ash Gardens. When Saika arrives at the always-stormy sanctuary, she is welcomed by its owner, an enormous, knit-cardiganed mythical beast named Frank, who offers her a role as one of the estate's caretakers. Overcome with grief, Saika accepts, desperate to put off her final farewell to her sister. But the work requires a witch with intrinsic power, and Saika's been disconnected from her magic since her sister's death two years prior.

Wanted to love it

I really wanted to love this story but it dragged on forever before we finally started getting clued into what was happening and that was frustrating. I also never connected with Saika and barely tolerated her by the end. I rooted for the other residents of Ash Garden and enjoyed every moment one of them was on the page.

It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment. Good story

I enjoyed this story and loved Rome and Janelle’s chemistry. However I did feel the Janelle/Amerie conflict was beat to death with the source of it ambiguous for WAY too long. And then the reveal was anticlimactic since it was the VERY obvious reason (which made me even more perplexed why it was prolonged in the shadows for so long). Also felt like we were being told Janelle was no doormat while we watched her be exactly that for 90% of the story. Definitely see NB’s storytelling talent and look forward to trying more from her.

Trey Denison is a man shaped by loss who has learned to bury his emotions and keep most relationships superficial. And Shayla Jordan is hiding from a past she can't seem to escape, even by starting over in a city where no one knows her secret. When Shayla rents the basement apartment in Trey’s childhood home, her quiet, enigmatic nature arouses his curiosity, and Shayla sees in Trey a chance to rediscover her sensuality. But as their initially cautious connection deepens far beyond anything either of them anticipated, the secrets they each harbor threaten to surface, jeopardizing everything they’ve built. Can Shayla and Trey overcome their pasts and embrace the possibility of a future together, or will their hidden truths tear them apart?

I already loved this story in ebook so was excited to revisit Trey and Shayla in audio. The narrator’s voice was smooth like silk and while I usually prefer male and female narrators for the respective parts, I enjoyed his performance and would absolutely listen to more of him. Now I’m reuniting with Darren and Paige LOL

Story
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.
