Story
In early 2021, popular artist Anna Marie Tendler checked herself into a psychiatric hospital following a year of crippling anxiety, depression and self-harm. Over two weeks, she underwent myriad psychological tests, participated in numerous therapy sessions, connected with fellow patients and experienced profound breakthroughs, such as when a doctor noted, “There is a you inside that feels invisible to those looking at you from the outside.”

Matter of Fact

I really liked the way Ms. Tindler told her story. She has a voice which draws you in and I like her perspective. It was poignant and raw and emotional. There is a lot to her journey and there were some instances where I wished she would have delved deeper into her experiences and gone further into the myriad perceptions of her “mental issues,” as well as a deeper unpacking of her relationship with Dr. Carr, but it took a lot of courage to share what she has and I was intrigued and interested in her journey to health. It’s definitely a recommended listen.

Story
Growing up on the Navajo Indian Reservation, David Crow and his siblings idolized their dad. Tall, strong, smart, and brave, the self-taught Cherokee regaled his family with stories of his World War II feats. But as time passed, David discovered the other side of Thurston Crow, the ex-con with his own code of ethics that justified cruelty, violence, lies - even murder. A shrewd con artist with a genius IQ, Thurston intimidated David with beatings to coerce him into doing his criminal bidding. David's mom, too mentally ill to care for her children, couldn't protect him.

Frustrating
Reviewed: 09-06-24
It was difficult to root for a protagonist who routinely engaged and reveled in perpetuating myriad cruelties labeled as “pranks.” Also, the main question of the lie is never really given its due in the form of an explanation or a reason for it. He explains what the lie is, but never addresses the way, which would’ve been the interesting question. He did break the cycle of violence and was able to move on, which is commendable. But overall between the poor narration, and the frustrations with the narrator, this was not a good read.

Enjoyable for a light coming of age story.
Reviewed: 04-26-24
Although the amount of drinking these high school kids was ridiculously overdone, this story captures some of the angst and questioning which comes from discovering one’s sexuality at a young age. It’s a nice first love story - perhaps a bit unrealistic in just how tidy it wraps up and how accepting everyone is about the two main character’s lesbianism, but an enjoyable listen nonetheless.

Fun

Overall, this was fun. The only frustrating part was the protagonist’ constant self-deprecation and her buying in to a false narrative which continued to potentially destroy relationships. It was a little too much. But…it was a fun read with a very body positive big girl, which was refreshing.

Truman was a petty, vindictive man
Reviewed: 03-18-24
I wanted to like this a lot more than I actually did. In a word, Truman Capote is an awful human being. The swans were interesting as a group, but ultimately, they led vacuous, empty lives, spent only in the pursuit of money and fame. Overall, this work was… meh.

Story
Before she was a trauma cleaner, Sandra Pankhurst was many things: husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, trophy wife... but as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home, she just wanted to belong. Now she believes her clients deserve no less. A man who bled quietly to death in his living room. Sarah Krasnostein has watched the extraordinary Sandra Pankhurst bring order and care to these, the living and the dead - and the book she has written is equally extraordinary.

I wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I ordered this book, but I’m so glad I took a chance. It’s at once heartbreaking and inspirational. Sandra Pankhurst is an absolute triumph. Beautifully written, and beautifully narrated, this is a love story true woman whose inner child was brutalized, but not bowed.

While the details of the job are interesting, the the author’s narcissism, know-it-all attitude, mean girl spirit, and basic lack of empathy, combined with the absolutely grating tone of the narrator, made this book, unlistenable and unenjoyable. Good thing it was free, otherwise I would be demanding a refund. That’s nine hours of my life I will never get back.

Could have been so much better
Reviewed: 08-27-23
Very slow, too much filler, not enough substance. This story of survival could have been so much better if it was written from a fact-based perspective instead of a cheerleading one. The emphasis, unfortunately, was not on the tragedy, and Tere’s survival, but rather beating us over with the head with why we should be so impressed with Tere. Ultimately it was a very frustrating listen. And the male narrator is terrible.

Story
Ann Rule was working on the biggest story of her career, tracking the trail of victims left by a brutal serial killer. Little did this future best-selling author know that the savage slayer she was hunting was the young man she counted among her closest friends. Everyone's picture of a natural winner, Ted Bundy was a bright, charming, and handsome man with a promising future as an attorney. But on January 24, 1989 Bundy was executed for the murders of three young women - and had confessed to taking the lives of at least thirty-five more women from coast to coast.

Good Info, But Way Too Sympathetic to Ted
Reviewed: 08-03-23
This was an in-depth examination of Bundy’s crimes and very informative in that regard; however, Rule, despite knowing better, comes across as almost smitten with Bundy and therefore unable to comprehend he manipulated her as he manipulated everyone else around him. She served a purpose for him and he exploited that mercilessly - to the extent she was barely able to acknowledge Bundy as a killer. Overall, this was a very sympathetic portrait of Ted - which, knowing the evil for which he was responsible, ultimately makes this book disappointing.
