Story
One of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Pride and Prejudice, is vividly brought to life by Academy Award nominee Rosamund Pike ( Gone Girl). In her bright and energetic performance of this British classic, she expertly captures Austen’s signature wit and tone. Her attention to detail, her literary background, and her performance in the 2005 feature film version of the novel provide the perfect foundation from which to convey the story of Elizabeth Bennet, her four sisters, and the inimitable Mr. Darcy.

I was hesitant to purchase a Version performed by someone so young. Now I see how silly that is given Elizabeth’s age. Rosamund Pike does an absolutely outstanding job.

Story
On a spring morning in 1951, 11-year-old chemist and aspiring detective Flavia de Luce gathers with her family at the railway station, awaiting the return of her long-lost mother, Harriet. Yet upon the train’s arrival in the English village of Bishop’s Lacey, Flavia is approached by a tall stranger who whispers a cryptic message into her ear. Moments later, he is dead, mysteriously pushed under the train by someone in the crowd. Who was this man, what did his words mean, and why were they intended for Flavia? Back home at Buckshaw, the de Luces’ crumbling estate, Flavia puts her sleuthing skills to the test.

I am stunned by how Alan Bradley was able to write about the inner word of an 11 year old girl facing one of the most terrible things a child can go through. This is an exceptional piece of emotional writing, cozy mystery aside. I absolutely loved it.

Full disclosure, I'm a Flavia nut, and even as a Flavia nut this wasn't my favorite of this brilliant series. I was a little lost several times, and the plot took Flavia's special destiny a bit too far so then it couldn't deliver a believable resolution. Also, it has got to be TOUGH to narrate in accents that are not one's own, and then try to differentiate characters within that accent. It didn't entirely work. HOWEVER, I'd follow Flavia to the ends of the fraying empire to see when she'll employ "the zipped lip" and there's no one I would rather hear say it than Jane Entwistle. Listen to it for the gems.

Story
Fifth in line to the throne at the time of her birth, Victoria was an ordinary woman thrust into an extraordinary role. As a girl, she defied her mother's meddling and an adviser's bullying, forging an iron will of her own. As a teenage queen, she eagerly grasped the crown and relished the freedom it brought her. She was outspoken with her ministers, overstepping conventional boundaries and asserting her opinions.

The narrator, yikes.

I have listened to a great number of British biographies and history books, and this narrator has an "unusual" style. I was able to eventually ignore the sharp pitch change from beginning to end of every sentence, but I have a high level of distress tolerance. It's a great book just listen to a sample before you buy.

Here at last is a history of England that is designed to entertain as well as inform and that will delight the armchair traveler, the tourist, or just about anyone interested in history. No people have engendered quite so much acclaim or earned so much censure as the English: extolled as the Athenians of modern times, yet hammered for their self-satisfaction and hypocrisy. But their history has been a spectacular one.

I believe the information presented would be interesting but I often feel like I'm trying to decipher one run on sentence beginning to end. Because British history is comprised of a linear succession of characters, different periods of time needed to be summarized thematically so that it didn't feel like listening to someone else's dream. Have you every been forced to listen to someone's dream and you just wish it would end? This is the first book I didn't finish and I've listened to a massive number of British history and Monarchical biographies.

Story
Award-winning author Alan Bradley returns with another beguiling novel starring the insidiously clever and unflappable 11-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce. The precocious chemist with a passion for poisons uncovers a fresh slew of misdeeds in the hamlet of Bishop’s Lacey - mysteries involving a missing tot, a fortune-teller, and a corpse in Flavia’s own backyard. Flavia had asked the old Gypsy woman to tell her fortune, but never expected to stumble across the poor soul, bludgeoned in the wee hours in her own caravan.

This series is one of the best, and Flavia is one of those characters that is so singular I was skeptical anyone could do her justice. I'm thrilled to be proven so wrong. Other than Jim Dale reading the Harry Potter series I have never listened to a book that was already this spectacular and improved so much by the reader. Flavia will forever come alive to me in the voice of Jayne Entwhistle. Don't delay and hit the purchase button!
