Story
Nancy Makin weighed an astounding 703 pounds in May 2000. She was 45 years old and had diabetes and heart disease. Thanks in equal parts to shame and logistics, she'd been homebound for a dozen years. But all that changed after a gift from her sister: a computer. A technophobe, Nancy ignored it for months, until finally boredom and curiosity pushed her into cyberspace. And there, in a chat room, she found the friendliness, the support, and even the love she'd been missing for so long.

Well writen and inspirational
Reviewed: 07-26-10
Makin does an excellent job of portraying her struggle with extreme obesity with honesty and humor. It is a heartbreaking story with a happy ending, and who can resist that? Makin does not gloss over her mistakes and poor decisions, nor does she take on the role of victim. The latter is probably why she has managed to survive and triumph. Very well done, and worth listening to.

Story
It's not so easy being Rosemary Goode and tipping the scales at almost 200 pounds - especially when your mother runs the most successful (and gossipiest!) beauty shop in town. After a spectacularly disastrous Christmas break, when the scale reaches an all-time high, Rosemary realizes that things need to change. (A certain basketball player, Kyle Cox, might have something to do with it.) So begins a powerful year of transformation and a journey toward self-discovery.

I greatly enjoyed listening to this novel, both because the author wrote a warm, endearing story and because the reader did such an excellent job. Supplee managed to capture the heartache of teen obesity without being preachy or maudlin. Rosemary, the main character, was strong yet vulnerable, and I could empathize with her and the other characters. The sub-plot of her mother's cancer was also handled very well, and I genuinely LIKED all of the characters...even the prickly ones. Well done.

Story
In the 1970s, Dolly Freed lived off the land dirt cheap and plum easy. Living in their own house on a half-acre lot outside of Philadelphia for almost five years, Dolly and her father produced their own food and drink and spent roughly $700 each per year. Thirty years later Dolly Freed's Possum Living is as fascinating and pertinent as it was in 1978. Tin House is reissuing the survivalist classic with a foreword by David Gates and an afterword by the author.

Frugality by breaking the law, poisoning animals

Really, really awful. There are better books on the market that advocate legal means to save money. Someone owes you money? Is suing you? Just call and threaten them or poison their dog. I don't care if her 2010 self says she does not agree with doing this anymore, it should never had been said, let alone reprinted. Don't want to pay taxes? Don't. She does not mention how much money or jail time it will cost you when you are caught. Too many baby bunnies? Just drown a few, "it's not as cruel as it sounds." Oh? I grew up on a farm, and though we were poor, we never drowned our baby rabbits. We DID hand raise the extras and gave them away as pets. Much of what Freed says is just not legal, moral, or practical. Those things that ARE of interest and worth can be found in other, better books. The Tightwad Gazette comes to mind, but there are others. Pass on this one.

If you or someone close to you is devoted to their church but still struggles to find meaning and passion in their faith; who loves their family, works hard, contributes to their community, but still feels life is somehow incomplete and hollow at the core; who is restless in spirit, with a nagging sense that there must be something more...there is The Magnificent Obsession.

Powerful and convicting

This audio was very powerful and convicting as Lotz outlines what one REALLY needs to do to truly have a fulfilling relationship with Jesus. We must give up everything, and Lotz gives many examples to what exactly that means. Very helpful and thought provoking.

Story
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

Great character turns repugnant
Reviewed: 04-14-10
Like other readers, I was enthralled with the first three quarters of the book. The plot at the beginning is interesting and the dialogue is sophisticated; the banter between the two main characters is both humorous and witty. However, the last quarter of the book became distasteful to me. I did not mind that I guessed the murderer early on since bringing the person to justice is part of the story. I truly minded that the author took an important, likable character and made that person totally distasteful to me. Really disappointed. Additionally, I too got tired of the f-bomb being used so much as well as the tedious going on and on when the book could have safely ended several chapters back...and I normally LOVE long books! Will I read another book by this author? Probably not, a shame because she started out so well.
