Story
Half-hidden by forest and overshadowed by threatening peaks, Le Sommet has always been a sinister place. Long plagued by troubling rumors, the former abandoned sanatorium has since been renovated into a five-star minimalist hotel. An imposing, isolated getaway spot high up in the Swiss Alps is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But Elin's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when her estranged brother, Isaac, and his fiancée, Laure, invite her to celebrate their engagement at the hotel, Elin really has no reason not to accept.

Foolish people doing idiotic things
Reviewed: 12-02-24
I felt like I was watching one of those teen horror flicks where someone decides to go take a shower by themselves while everyone else is screaming and running. Idiotic choice after idiotic choice. Odd assumptions. My eyeballs hurt from rolling them so often. The best thing about the book was the final 20 minutes. Was it worth the previous 11 hours. No. Not sure why I finished. Pure stubbornness, I guess. I'd give this one a pass.

If only the sex talk we’re less graphic
Reviewed: 11-11-24
I feel like I would have really loved this story that I couldn’t get past the graphic sex talk. It just didn’t seem necessary. Oh well.

But within a day of landing in the charming seaside town of Port Stewart to work on her latest book, she's getting calls and texts for some dude on her new number. Weird ones. Sad ones. Sexy ones. Ones that make her want to meet him. For curiosity's sake...if nothing else.

Funny dialogue- graphic sex
Reviewed: 11-03-24
I really enjoyed the characters and the witty dialogue - but the graphic sex was unnecessary in my opinion. Ruined it for me.

Gives as good as she gets. Not for white women?
Reviewed: 10-20-24
As a white #not too fat woman, I felt generalized, demeaned and minimalized by the author - exactly as her characters felt. I suppose that was on purpose? If you can get past this (as I eventually did), the writing is beautiful and there are many wonderful, powerful messages for all women. Yes, even the white ones and (dare I say it) the slender ones. I wish I could recommend it to all my friends, but I don't think I can.

Here she is loved and appreciated in contrast to her lonely childhood as an unwanted granddaughter. When a wealthy neighbor proposes marriage so that she can care for his motherless children, she is delighted to show him the door, proud that she is “a free and independent woman who can earn her own living”.

Like a cross between Anne of Green Gables, Christy and Tom Sawyer. A nice change from all the murder mysteries I usually read. Utterly charming and lovely. Wonderful narration, too.

As a non-indigenous person, I felt unwelcome
Reviewed: 09-24-24
I feel a strong connection with the earth and nature and was excited to sit down and immerse myself in this book, but I couldn't get past the introduction. The author made me, as a non-indigenous person, feel extremely unwelcome and unworthy of receiving her knowledge. She clearly needed to get her feelings out, but even knowing that I am not one of the people she was referring to, her message seemed counter to the gifts she seeks to share in her book, I tried to set this initial feeling aside and receive the information she provides. but kept feeling pierced with negativity. It made me sad. Regretfully, I cannot continue reading and because I was out of credits and spent actual dollars, I can't even return the book. It's a shame.

Story
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

Lyrically written with a wonderful vision, but confusing in places, especially at the end (!). A bit preachy. But definitely worth the credit.

Dirk never wanted to end up on Zaroff's island. He'd cheated and lied, stole and tricked, begged and crawled, all to save his own life, one payment at a time. But now the debt's come due, and Dirk missed his payments. He must muster every ounce of guile and strength at his disposal, must embrace the supernatural powers he'd struggled with for so long, must call upon allies both old and new to face the most terrifying foe a man can face . . . the consequences of his own actions. He doesn't know if he'll survive, but he won't go down without a fight.
