Very slow
Reviewed: 11-08-24
This was very slow and not very “gripping.” I’ve stayed with it because I kept hoping there’d be a twist, or something to keep me listening, but sadly, I just can’t listen any longer. I quit. I hate to do that, but I just can’t get into it.

They were truly forgotten
Reviewed: 02-11-24
Another Kristin Hannah that I had a terrible time putting down. My husband was in Nam and wounded, and came home early. He would never talk about it. Those Vets were never appreciated because they didn’t WIN a war. I’m sure Frankie’s emotions and despair is very similar to what so many felt coming home. I just know my husband, a young officer, came back a different man. Wow. Another great book. Thank you, Kristin Hannah.

Great DIFFERENT WWII novel
Reviewed: 01-16-24
I love historical fiction and have read/listened to many books of that period. This was Belgium and one group’s attempt to stand up to the Nazis. This book, while sometimes a little far fetched, was more like what often happened…not all came out unscathed. It was a good listen…sad…but good.

Sweet story
Reviewed: 02-23-22
At first, I had trouble getting into the story because there were so many characters, but I’m glad I did. There were a lot of Italian customs and family dynamics that needed to be explained so you’d understand where and why the book was going the way it did. I really loved the sweet story and am glad I stuck with it.

Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Really good book!

I’ve not read any of Catherine Ryan Hyde books before. This was sooo well researched and planned. A lot of human thoughts and emotions to be considered. She gave you a good “picture” of all sides of the conflict. The resolution was the only way it could have been concluded. What a great “thought full” book. The narrator was the best I’ve listened to in a long time!! Going to find another Catherine Ryan Hyde book now!

Story
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Entertaining and interesting
Reviewed: 10-10-20
This was a lesson in art and history. I knew who the artists were but didn’t realize they were contemporaries. The jealousy and admiration they had for each other was well defined in the story, whether it was true or not. It really added interest. I’ve been to Florence and Rome and seen the many, many masterful works of art. This brought it all back and makes me want to see them again. A very interesting listen.
