Story
Beginning with Mt. Vesuvius, whose eruption in Roman times helped spark the science of geology, and ending in a lab in the West of England where mathematical models and lab experiments replace direct observation, Richard Fortey tells us what the present says about ancient geologic processes. He shows how plate tectonics came to rule the geophysical landscape and how the evidence is written in the hills and in the stones. And in the process, he takes us on a wonderful journey around the globe to visit some of the most fascinating and intriguing spots on the planet.

You’ll probably enjoy this audiobook. Maybe a little quirkier than Bryson’s, but if science, the history of science, and a sense of place is your thing, this book delivers. The science piece goes deeper than usual general interest books, but done great here.

This was a nice surprise. I’m more into post -apocalyptic survival than vampire stuff but this was a fresh take on both. Hopefully there’s a part two coming soon.

Good listen but a far cry from Ghost Fleet. I liked the main character but the plot only had momentum at the very end.

Trying to understand our human origins has always been a fundamental part of who we are. Today, with the help of dramatic archaeological discoveries and groundbreaking advancements in technology and scientific understanding, we are closer than we've ever been to learning the true story. In recent decades, it has been the science of paleoanthropology that has led the investigation, helping us make sense of this controversial subject and providing us with a richer understanding of our origins.

Too simplistic

The material is overall good but the guy definitely dummies it down way too much. At one point and early lecture he says the word stature. He then feels the need to define it for the dummies who don't know that it means height. It's just really annoying I felt like I was in a grade school lecture.

Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've read a number of novels in French but it's not my native language. I thought this would be a good first French audiobook because of the relatively simple story. I misremembered how subtle the story really is. I'm alternating listening to a chapter of the English version, and then a chapter of this version. Very enjoyable that way.
What was one of the most memorable moments of 1984?
The first "hatred" scene. So much scarier than the teenage me remembered--especially after listening to some WWII history, including the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
Any additional comments?
Please offer more classics in French--English-language as well as French literature. As of now the choice is pretty limited, but my guess French and Spanish are the two most popular second languages (acquired, at least) for Anglophones.

Story
There is Thorn, a shaman himself. He lives to pass down his wisdom and his stories - to teach those who would follow in his footsteps. There is Heather, the healer who, in many ways, holds the clan together. There is Elga, an outsider and the bringer of change. And then there is Loon, the next shaman, who is determined to find his own path. But in a world so treacherous, that journey is never simple - and where it may lead is never certain.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It almost feels like the first few chapters were taken from the middle of the book then tacked on the front. Once the book starts following the chronology of the setters, starting with the selection process, it got really good.
Any additional comments?
Did anyone else feel like the first few chapters didn't belong there or is it just me? It was plain odd.
