Goor pacing and story, for the most part

It was a solid book but I think Derek, the son, ruined it a bit for me. Maybe it was how he was written; maybe it was the performance; maybe both. He was just so annoying and dumb at times. Unbelievably so. It took a bit away for me.

Story
The Tantalus 13 survey expedition went off the rails as soon as Mary Ketch and the crew of the Diamelen learned that the thing beneath their feet wasn’t a planet. An impossibly vast and ancient artificial structure lies below, hidden from the universe under a façade of cratered stone. SCARAB arrived on Tantalus 13 two years ago. An artificially intelligent, self-constructing factory, it was supposed to aid the crew in their mission, to meet their every need.

Story
Like Gloria Naylor’s The Women of Brewster Place, Sidik Fofana’s electrifying collection of eight interconnected stories showcases the strengths, struggles, and hopes of one residential community in a powerful storytelling experience. Each short story follows a tenant in the Banneker Homes, a low-income high rise in Harlem where gentrification weighs on everyone’s mind. We root for these characters and more as they weave in and out of each other’s lives, endeavoring to escape from their pasts and blaze new paths forward for themselves and the people they love.

A day in the life…
Reviewed: 03-04-23
The stories were about nothing. And everything. The lives of the storytellers casually interconnect without feeling forced and also without lingering. You get a glimpse of the “other side of the story” but then it quickly moves on to each person’s own unique situation. It was interesting. Can’t say it was one of my favorites. As a middle class white guy I couldn’t exactly relate with the stories but I’m grateful to have lead the opportunity to hear them in all their rawness. An important listen.

The year is 1680, in the heart of the Golden Age of Piracy, and more than 300 daring, hardened pirates—a potent mix of low-life scallywags and a rare breed of gentlemen buccaneers—gather on a remote Caribbean island. The plan: to wreak havoc on the Pacific coastline, raiding cities, mines, and merchant ships. The booty: the bright gleam of Spanish gold and the chance to become a legend. So begins one of the greatest piratical adventures of the era—a story not given its full due until now.

Peter Pan is missing; Neverland is in trouble. For adults, that might not matter all that much, but for children—whose dreams and imagination draw strength from the wild god’s power—the magic we take for granted in the real world is in danger of being lost forever. Such is the life of a now grown-up Michael Darling.

This one just didn’t do it for me as much. Had I read nothing else of his I’d probably give it a 3. Because of the history and deep connection I have I gave it a 4. It just didn’t touch me as much as the others — but mind you, it did touch me! I can’t say it was flat, but my expectations for the third book to be on the level with the others just weren’t met.
Still my favorite author. Maybe I’ll try it again later.

Alice in Wonderland meets Resident Evil. Good premise. Boring execution.
Reviewed: 09-26-22
This book had all the potential, but the execution was so boring. Inner monologues, personal struggle, hidden feelings and struggle. The whole story was masked by these. An opportunity missed. I’m not suggesting I needed a complete absence of these; but give us a little bit of action! Move the story along. Have something interesting to say.
The story came second to the feelings of the individual characters and as a result the story that took place while people struggled with their feelings was lackluster.

Really enjoyed this listen
Reviewed: 02-25-22
I gave it five stars. Was it the most enthralling book I’ve read? I can’t say yes. But I also have to admit that it held my attention 99% of the time and I found myself looking for excuses to listen. I usually save books like this (horror/mystery, higher projection value) for when I run because it keeps my interest, but I found myself turning to this every 5-10 minute block of time I could find.
I almost knocked it a point for it’s social undertone (no spoiler). And had the book harped on it more I probably would have. Luckily it was only briefly in your face and I was able to get past it.
Overall I’m very happy with this book and have recommended it to people. It’s got depth and good pace and plenty of things to keep you guessing. It won’t blow your mind — and I don’t mean that as a knock — but it will keep your attention the whole 14 hours.

Story
Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear about someone committing a violent, reprehensible, even evil, act. And each time it happens, before we know anything about the circumstances, we are already sure of one thing: We are nothing like that perpetrator. But how can we be so sure? After all, we are all human. In Understanding the Dark Side of Human Nature, Professor Daniel Breyer takes us on a fascinating philosophical journey into many of the deepest and darkest questions that have engaged humanity for millennia.

More general philosophy than dark side
Reviewed: 10-09-21
It tried to attack philosophy from a “dark” perspective, but for me it fell short. It felt like a gimmick to talk philosophy.
Now don’t get me wrong: the subject matter is good; the delivery is good. I just wanted more specifically about the dark side of humanity.

The first two in the series were better
Reviewed: 05-21-21
This was ok. It was a bit confusing. The back and forth with the two storylines and sets of characters. It just didn’t gel for me.
The other two books in the series were really enjoyable for me. They focused more on the monsters and anomalies. This was heavy on characters and character development.
For a book with a Cthulhu-like creature on the cover, it was barely in the book and only played a tangential role, providing the reason to hurry things up.
