Story
A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

typically, a reader can find characters to root when for. I have tried several books in this series, thinking that the people in the books would surely grow on me, but sadly no.

Story
One of the most highly acclaimed and best-selling novels of 1991, Mariette in Ecstasy inspires even the most discriminating listener to some degree of reverence. This captivating story of faith and divine madness may move you to examine your own belief system. Since the tender age of four, Mariette Baptiste has had visions of her Savior. Now, at 17, she is entering the convent to dedicate her life to Him. At first, she is welcomed and admired. Then she begins to bleed from stigmata, and the villagers regard her as a saint.

Can you answer this question: Who is the Antichrist and what is the Apocalypse? The earliest Christians following the Twelve Apostles often spoke and wrote about the arrival of the Antichrist before the return of Jesus Christ at the end of time. Best-selling author and professor Dr. Taylor Marshall provides an easy-to-understand collection of Church fathers, saints, and mystics as he pulls back the curtain on the end times prophecies of the Book of Revelation—the book originally called the Apocalypse.

March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

I love this series for so many reasons. The history comes alive through endearing characters who never make stupid mistakes and then spend pages of mental narration explaining why they had to do it. It is all time period appropriate, exciting, and I can’t wait for a installment!

Masterpiece of subtle storytelling

Andrew Klavan has wrought a masterpiece of subtle storytelling, unveiling the mystery with no gaudy plot devices to "keep you turning pages" and without a single TSTL moment. His characters are wholly believable, likeable, yet intriguingly different. Narration is atmospherically perfect. I highly recommend this.

i have bought and heard every one in this series. Fun and quirky characters, history with a Charleston flavor, ghosts and mystery made for great entertainment through the first three books. The degradation of the characters and the writing itself was sad to experience. Enjoy the early ones!
