BLOOPERS!
Reviewed: 05-02-24
Seriously… it’s almost like the publisher/producer was offended by the lack of offensive language in the book, so they had to add the blooper section so the ending included some trash.
These people are strangely uncreative for folks who sit on the black thrones of popular entertainment.

The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the air—and Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagaësia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled.

Slogging along; agonizing
Reviewed: 11-19-23
Forced. Forced. Forced; Like ground processed meat pressed through an orifice that now only resembles what it was before, wrapped in plastic.
So…
When the author says the writing went quickly, I think he is lying. This was not some smooth sailing writ. Rather, it seems like a fight: agony of will power, that never hits a critical mass of flow. —You know- that flow that makes a story enjoyable and unpredictable? Well, he misses it.
It reads like a slog, with wholly predictable results. - Wordy, but lacking: as if, he tried to recapture the essence of the 13 yr old, uninhibited genius, but all we get is the adulty darkness of a cynic who has lost the joy.
On the other hand, this is a fine study of the potential challenges of adulthood; when idealistic philosophy of youth gives way to the continuum of acquiescence that turns dreams into ambitions, and then the general retardation of what we cannot repel. I do sympathize. I just don’t like it.

Dante, Blays, and Gladdic's final effort to defeat him has failed. Within weeks—if not days—Rale will be destroyed. One last hope remains. They can't kill Nolost, but they may be able to eject him from Rale before he can complete his work. To do so, though, they'll have to destroy a world themselves: Olastar, the home of the portals that link all other places together.

Ugh! So many black tentacles!!!
Reviewed: 06-10-23
It’s basically a book about black tentacles in various forms, and nether that is insufficient, somehow being sufficient over and over and over again.
Really—
I love this series, especially the wise cracks between the main characters… but somehow, it seemed like the author lost his flow, with this one, and slogged along, trying to manufacture the energy to tell a story of mortals fighting an impossible fight. He made an unconquerable enemy, the battles with it became monotonous and far fetched, and you can feel the tension in the author’s own dissonance. It doesn’t suck. It’s just… not really good.
Still, it’s worth listening to, if you have made it this far into Blaze and Dante’s story… I guess.

Jin Rou wanted to be a cultivator. A man powerful enough to defy the heavens. A master of martial arts. A lord of spiritual power. Unfortunately for him, he died, and now I’m stuck in his body. Arrogant Masters? Heavenly Tribulations? All that violence and bloodshed? Yeah, no thanks. I’m getting out of here. Farm life sounds pretty great. Tilling a field by hand is fun when you’ve got the strength of ten men—though maybe I shouldn’t have fed those Spirit Herbs to my pet rooster.

After finishing book 2, I am thrilled with this series so far.
I’m encouraged by its support of honesty, fun, kindness, freedom and Liberty, achievement through effort, sexual morality, hope and goodness. —but having said, it is not a prudish flaunt. Rather, it is an organic appeal to our best human potentials: even with the R rated language that pops up on occasion.
I hope it stays the course and does not become a bait and switch. That would be sad.

An ancient prophecy foretold their coming, the chosen few who will bring peace to a land embroiled in a century of mistrust and war. When kings start dying, that hope and belief swiftly turns to fear. Roan Loren is one of the fatemarked, but has hidden his mark of power his entire life, fearing the damage it might cause to those around him. A great evil is coming. He can't hide anymore.

Well, this year, after the Spring Planting season, I’m really gonna relax and put down roots. It’s the slow life for me. Sure, the talking animals and cultivators coming to live with me are a bit weird, but this year everything is gonna be basically normal. There definitely won’t be any Heavenly Tribulations, ancient formations, or cultivator issues to deal with . . .

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives. Including their gruesome deaths. Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

It was okay
Reviewed: 04-11-23
Characters were moderately compelling, plot was mostly free of holes with some believable twists, moral framework was “good enough” and the narrator was relatively talented.
It was just… kind of water off my back. Good enough to listen to, but not good enough to talk about, or recommend to anyone.
