Story
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

I tried my best
Reviewed: 03-09-22
I'm sorry, but I tried my best to like this book. I actually tried twice to get past chapter 1 and it was impossible. This is the strangest book I've read. What really did it for me is when the cat started to narrate. I checked out at that moment. This book is so strange that it actually gave me anxiety trying to figure out what the heck was going on and trying to keep up. And what I'm still trying to figure out is if this book is poorly written or if the narration was just that bad. Sigh...

I was a little skeptical at first, but the store grew on me over time. I enjoyed the narration and the story was well written. Some parts were a little strange, but it all came together in the end.

Story
Detective Harry Jordan sees his lake home as a respite from solving crimes on the streets of Boston. The Osborne family views their cottage as a way to avoid the distractions of life - especially for Wally Osborne, a famous horror writer who seems to need the peace and quiet more than anyone. One night, Harry is walking alongside the lake when the night is rocked by an explosion: the Havnel house is engulfed in a conflagration, and young Bea is seen fleeing, hair on fire, and plunging into the lake.

Story
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

Overall the story was good but I didn't like the Roman part of the story. The book could have been written without it.

Glad it was free

This story was so predictable from the very beginning. One chapter in I knew what was going to happen. Also, the narrator made no attempt to change her voice when playing each character, so it was difficult to figure out at times who was speaking.

Good Story, but it gets weird!
Reviewed: 10-27-20
Wow, what a story. Very good plot but it gets weird. However, I still enjoyed the book. I am usually very particular about the narration but I found the narrator to be quite comical when narrating the female voices. It kept it interesting for me.
