Story
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

A little disjointed, but a good read
Reviewed: 12-06-22
I am a student of construction and architecture, so the parts about the world's fair was really eye opening. I also like mysteries, so the parts about HH Holmes were good. I do think there could be more about the latter in the book. Also, other than being a visitor to the World's Fair and using other travelers as victims, there is no real connection in the two stories. So much so, each part of the story required its own epilogue. Both halves are good, but the chemistry isn't there.

Michael Koryta never disappoints! Liked this one!!
Reviewed: 07-04-20
The story takes the usual Michael Koryta twists, but without being predictable. If you are familiar with his work, you know the they're coming, yet they can STILL surprise you. I like that his books are mystery books and so not much police procedurals. His characters aren't forced into the story, they aren't over-written. Easy read or listen on audio book. I highly recommend!

The story was good, exciting. The ending was terrible! It felt like the writer simply ran out of steam. I don't like crime dramas that ends with a neat little bow. Crime is messy, and should be written that way.

Beautiful story! Heart warming and wrenching!
Reviewed: 11-03-17
This story was beautifully told. Wingate is able to weave fiction across true, tragic events and not stray too far off the fine line that divides them. The plot is sad, sometimes painful to hear. but her characters are well written and authentic, pulling you into the story, cheering for redemption.

The Pity Party that never wants to end!
Reviewed: 03-08-17
I didn't give this one star bc I was at least able to finish it, but not without using fast forward several times.
First, the narration is terrible. Besides using the worst stereotyped voice of "husky brooding lesbian" for one main character, her transition between characters was clunky. The narrator whines her way thru the majority of the book's seemingly unending wallow of both main characters. Only to read the sex scenes like she just hiked a mountain with emphysema.
The story was predictable and slow. If you removed all of the repetitive, self-deprecating lamenting over "should I or shouldn't I?" you'd be left with a very short story. If any two actual people spent the amount of time and childishness that these send women spend dodging around each other in denial, they would need therapy and not a relationship. After the 20th time of hearing about your "guilt trip", I'm over it.
I recommend this book only as a last resort for a good wallow in self-pity.

Story
Taking inspiration from numerous fairy tales and weaving them into a wholly original story, Into the Woods is a whirlwind of a novel, full of imaginative happenings, dastardly deeds and thrilling adventure. Our guides are sisters three: Storm, Aurora and Anything Eden. Accidentally orphaned and left to fend for themselves in a decaying mansion on the edge of the wilds, they come to the very much unwanted attention of the sinister Dr DeWilde: a scar-faced gentleman with a pied waistcoat and an unhealthy interest in rats.

Long, but worth it
Reviewed: 05-10-16
This book only gets 3 stars from me because, so far of the 9 books I've listened to by Mr. Koryta, this is my least favorite. It becomes obvious pretty shortly in the story that this is one of the authors earlier works. His characters are good, but the plot doesn't move quickly, the setting isn't as fully developed as other books, and towards the end the story starts to really drag. I don't have to be told how "evil" the antagonist is a hundred times before I get it. He has gotten better with his editing since, but still Koryta remains a far better author than a good majority of the trite works ending up on audible now. So, if you like a good thriller-style story, it's a recommended listen.

Story
Britt-Marie can't stand mess. She eats dinner at precisely the right time and starts her day at six in the morning because only lunatics wake up later than that. And she is not passive-aggressive. Not in the least. It's just that sometimes people interpret her helpful suggestions as criticisms, which is certainly not her intention. But at 63, Britt-Marie has had enough. She finally walks out on her loveless 40-year marriage and finds a job in the only place she can: Borg, a small, derelict town devastated by the financial crisis.

Great characters, disappointing ending
Reviewed: 05-06-16
I loved the book until the last two chapters. The pace changed and the ending seemed rushed and contrived, like the author didn't know how to end the story. It was disappointing in a way that felt like he WANTED it to be disappointing. The effort put into the other 35 chapters could have been seen through. I will read his next book, but if this is a trend for this author, it may be my last.
