Story
In the Dream House is Carmen Maria Machado's engrossing and wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship with a charismatic but volatile woman, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. And it's that struggle that gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope - the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman....

So impressed by Carmen Maria Machado

I’ve listened to books narrated by the author before, and they didn’t work very well. However, this delivery was perfect. It was very nice to hear the story from her own voice. I’m glad she chose to read it
Also, her experience is tragic, but it gave me so much hope for surviving such an ordeal. There really are so few lesbian abuse books, and it’s hard to find someone to learn from and relate to. And it’s so beautifully written
I truly wish the best for her, and I want to thank her for this book. It’s a story everyone should listen to

Story
Sophie Winters nearly died. Twice. The first time, she's 14, and escapes a near-fatal car accident with scars, a bum leg, and an addiction to Oxy that'll take years to kick. The second time, she's 17, and it's no accident. Sophie and her best friend Mina are confronted by a masked man in the woods. Sophie survives, but Mina is not so lucky. When the cops deem Mina's murder a drug deal gone wrong, casting partial blame on Sophie, no one will believe the truth: Sophie has been clean for months, and it was Mina who led her into the woods that night for a meeting shrouded in mystery.

Good story. Work needed on voice acting
Reviewed: 06-25-24
I really enjoyed the story, but the voice acting could use some work. The character voices all sound the same. That being said, I think it’s pretty special to hear from the author herself.

Story
The Four Realms—Life, Death, Light, and Darkness—all converge on the city of dusk. But the gods have withdrawn their favor from the once thriving and vibrant metropolis. And without it, all the realms are dying. Unwilling to stand by and watch the destruction, the four heirs to divine power—Angelica, an elementalist with her eyes set on the throne; Risha, a necromancer fighting to keep the peace; Nikolas, a soldier who struggles to see the light; and Taesia, a shadow-wielding rogue with a reckless heart—will become reluctant allies in the quest to save their city.

I loved the reader's voice. I loved the story and the characters
I can see why people would complain about too many characters. I agree, but they honestly weren't that hard to keep separated. I do wish she cut down the main characters to fewer, but lessons learned.
Still a great story and a fun time!

Story
Sancia, Clef, and Berenice have gone up against long odds in the past. But the war they’re fighting now is one even they can’t win. This time, they’re not facing robber-baron elites or even an immortal hierophant, but an entity whose intelligence is spread over half the globe—one that uses the magic of scriving to control not just objects but human minds. To fight it, they’ve used scriving technology to transform themselves and their allies into an army—a society—unlike anything humanity has seen before.

Sigh. It's hard to write a good ending
Reviewed: 03-26-23
I really enjoyed the majority of the story. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I finished the entire story in about 3 days. However, the ending left... It wasn't just that the ending wasn't the ending I wanted, which is true. It was also that I felt the characters changing and not just from the trauma. It was such an irritating ending, I don't think I'm going to recommend it to many people.

Story
Sancia Grado is a thief, and a damn good one. And her latest target, a heavily guarded warehouse on Tevanne’s docks, is nothing her unique abilities can’t handle. But unbeknownst to her, Sancia’s been sent to steal an artifact of unimaginable power, an object that could revolutionize the magical technology known as scriving. The Merchant Houses who control this magic - the art of using coded commands to imbue everyday objects with sentience - have already used it to transform Tevanne into a vast, remorseless capitalist machine.

It took some time to get into, but once I did, I was hooked for life! Very interesting concept, fun characters, and interesting story. And I actually think the TINY bit of romance added some weight and risk at the end. Very well done.

Not my cup of tea
Reviewed: 03-14-23
The story is extremely unique. I enjoy the characters and the creativity. However, there are parts that literally made me lose my appetite. Utter disgust is not something I want to feel while listening to any book. I don’t think I’d ever feel confident recommending this book to anyone. But if you neglect all the gross parts, the core story is very fascinating

I enjoyed book one. I really wanted a great book two to finish it off. But it was as if the author was tired of writing this story at the end. I feel like she could have continued the story for an entire third book but didn’t want to. The beginning and middle was very well done, then she rushed to finish. Left a bad taste in my mouth
