Liberating

Generally to keep it short and sweet, permission to be the freak I am, how to be the freak I am while being safe for myself and others, and a great reminder that I am hardly the only freak around. It has definitely dismantled some of the shame I didn't know I still carried and cleared many of the cobwebs left over from my 1980s upbringing (basically I was raised by wolves when it comes to sexuality). I do wish there were more coverage of trans issues around sexuality, but the book was written before we really became visible to the wider world, and given the wonderful spirit of inclusion from which the book was written, I'm sure when I take a look at the website, I'll find lots of resources specialized in that direction. A lot of wonderful resources are also discussed in the book, and I look forward to exploring them.

Story
Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: What does it mean to love?

Heartwarming and Heartbreaking All at Once
Reviewed: 11-17-23
Kazuo Ishiguro has managed to write a novel that left me at moments at the edge of tears--tears of joy and tears of anguish all at once. This book is a masterpiece. Did sweet, loveable, all-giving, wise beyond her neural net, and divinely curious little Klara get the love she deserved in the end? Well, I don't want to spoil it for you. An amazing book by an amazing author.

Story
Saint Augustine's contributions to Christian theology are second to no other post-apostolic author in the whole sweep of church history. Yet along side his doctrinal treatises, Augustine tells a story of his life devoted to Christ as his only satisfaction. The Confessions is at once the autobiographical account of Augustine's life of Christian faith and at the same time a compelling theology of Christian spirituality for everyone.

Deepened my understanding of Christianity, history
Reviewed: 06-20-23
I'll start by saying that I'm not Christian but am deeply interested in what has shaped the mindset of western society. as such this was a valuable read. Even if I don't land on the same conclusions as Augustine, find his thoughts on gender roles harmful and his self-negation painful and sorrowing to listen to, I also find his writing lucid, his personality engaging, his intelligence masterful and his vulnerability endearing. Had we lived at the same time and gone to the same university, I might have found him to be an enlivening friend and debate partner.

Story
In a time of social and ecological crisis, what can we as individuals do to make the world a better place? This inspirational and thought-provoking book serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling, replacing it with a grounding reminder of what’s true: we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power.

Story
The narrator of Atwood's riveting novel calls himself Snowman. When the story opens, he is sleeping in a tree, wearing an old bedsheet, mourning the loss of his beloved Oryx and his best friend Crake, and slowly starving to death. He searches for supplies in a wasteland where insects proliferate and pigoons and wolvogs ravage the pleeblands, where ordinary people once lived, and the Compounds that sheltered the extraordinary. As he tries to piece together what has taken place, the narrative shifts to decades earlier. How did everything fall apart so quickly?

Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: Why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.
