Story
Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice (and a wanna-be thief) until an assassin’s bolt kills his master, Garkin. Along with Aahz, the green-scaled, purple-tongued demon and master magician summoned by Garkin, he sets out on a quest to get even. The road to vengeance is bound to prove rocky, however, because Skeeve can barely light a candle with his beginning magic, and Aahz has lost his own considerable magical abilities as a consequence of Garkin’s summoning spell.

A blast from my past, but incomplete!
Reviewed: 10-15-24
I discovered these books 40 years ago and they still have a place in my heart. It's hard to revisit something from 4 decades ago, but these books brought back many great memories as a young man discovering sci-fi books for the first time. Their humor and not taking themselves quite seriously in terms of fantasy, always made me smile.
The only drawback to reading these is the series isn't complete on audible, it is missing book 10 and it goes in a different direction when you get to book 11 you feel somewhat confused with the storyline. I think this would be a great series to do a single-book omnibus like they have done with so many other books on Audible. I know I would want it for my collection!

Story
An inn is a place to rest, a place to talk and share stories, a place to find adventure, or a starting ground for quests and legends. It is in this world, at least. To Erin Solstice, an inn seems like a medieval relic from the past. But here she is, running from Goblins and trying to survive in a world full of monsters and magic. She’d be more excited about all of this if everything wasn’t trying to kill her. But an inn is what she’s found, and so that’s what she becomes; an innkeeper, who serves drinks to heroes and monsters. Mostly monsters. But it’s a living, right?

I was listening to a movie review, and they were very critical and ridiculed the phrase subverts your expectations. This series has subverted my expectations but in a delightful way! I just finished the 9th book in the series and each book is full of funny surprises, emotions that tug at your heart, and characters that you become invested in. One of the things that makes the books compelling is that 9 books in it's hard to define who is the villain, who is the hero, and the lines between good and evil full of tragic heroes who are trying to deal with impossible choices trying to do the best for their people, their friends, and a strange new world many find themselves in! This is becoming on of my favorite series ever!

If you are looking for a literary classic this is not it, But this fits into a new kind of story type that has a gaming element combined with a new kind of fantasy with a feel all its own! What it is, is fun. I had fun listening to this and other books of this type of format. It's something different! The 2 main characters bring kind of an American sensibility to a fantasy realm, with a certain elitist disdain for those in power.
I just finished the fifth book now and my only criticism is changing the narration, and with the start of the 6th book, there is now a 3rd narrator. With audiobooks, you get used to how a character sounds so that is really the only thing that has bugged me about the series thus far, with this having 10 books in the series you get invested with how a character sounds, So I will see if I can get used to the new guy in book six.

I was surprised by this book and others like it! You are following characters playing a game in a future time where technology lets you not just play a game but experience it. But there is always some quirk or something that makes it more. This book, Ascend online, The Life Reset Series are not going to go down as literary classics, but they are fun! Sometimes that is just what you're hoping for. The only thing disappointing is that the next books are not available!

This series is probably my most favorite ever! I enjoy the laughing and a good story all the books in this series have done that right up till these last two books. I use audiobooks a little different I guess than others maybe? They are my main form of entertainment and I will listen to a good story again and again. It's all most like an old-time radio series, I am not hoping for the story to end, but to keep me entertained and looking forward to the next show in the series. I enjoy whimsy because not everything has to be serious. The tragedy of the last book made me kind of sad, but I understand that tragedy is part of war. This book kind of left me even more emotionally spent with an ending that, well it left me saying, "Say it ain't so Joe" The world is full of dark stories, I just hope this one hasn't decided to follow that path.

The Columbus day series may be my all-time favorite series to listen too on audiobook next to Harry Potter! Good story, not too serious, and easy to really care about the characters. I listen to the whole series, again and again, waiting for the next book, I also love that it has really it's just scratched the surface on all the possible storylines that Craig Alanson keeps surprising me with. So here come my big "But", I understand this was kind of a tribute to the old-time radio theater, and a chance for celebrity fans to play along. It was almost too to much take, between the special effects, soundtrack, all the big production is was sometimes hard to follow the story. I get it! I am just anxious now for the next book.

I am finding different series on audible that strikes me more like a continuing show. This series, Columbus Day Series, Delvers LLC Series. They're fun, good stories and really not too serious and I don't mind listening to them over and over again. If you're looking for a literary classic these books arent it. But if you're looking for some fun, that takes your mind off the world for a while with characters that you want to follow, these and the other series are amazing just for that. I almost hope they don't end and just keep telling the story of Victory and the girls. If I had one complaint about these books is that they are too short. Book 5 is out so let's get on getting it on audible!

Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

I really just stumbled across this book, and I was taken by surprise in chapter 10 when the 2 main characters come together for the first time. I don't want to spoil the surprise! The book reads like watching most of the Marvel Comic movies. Not to dark, good stories, and funny in all the right places. I bought the first book in July, then the next one and the next one, and now I am at the spot where I so want the next book! I have several series that I like to listen to again and again. The Harry Potter series with Jim Dale, I Like to listen to it at least once a year. I have listened to this one 5 times since this summer. I find when I run out of new books this is the one to listen to again. Hope that isn't to much hype but I have truly enjoyed these series! One special note to the author, No more vacation time! Time to get going on the next book!

FitzChivalry - royal bastard and former king’s assassin - has left his life of intrigue behind. As far as the rest of the world knows, FitzChivalry Farseer is dead and buried. Masquerading as Tom Badgerlock, Fitz is now married to his childhood sweetheart, Molly, and leading the quiet life of a country squire. Though Fitz is haunted by the disappearance of the Fool, who did so much to shape Fitz into the man he has become, such private hurts are put aside in the business of daily life, at least until the appearance of menacing, pale-skinned strangers casts a sinister shadow over Fitz’s past...and his future.

Would you listen to Fool's Assassin again? Why?
I have listened to the book twice now. I bought this to try when it was on a special and enjoyed it. Unfortunately it was the first book of hers I tried. So when I like it I bought the next in the series. I like that so I got another and the problem was its the tail end of the series and not the beginning. So don't buy this one first if you haven't read the others. They all tie together and each one you listen too the others start make this one make more sense. I have now read 10 others of her books and it really helps the story if you have read them in sequence. Characters come and go in all of the other books, with even a few surprises. So start with The Farseer: Assassin's Apprentice and work your way through them I think you will enjoy them all.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Fool's Assassin?
No spoilers from me, but the magics in this book are subtle, but all lead somewhere if your reading the books in order.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Well I started with this one first, then back tracked to the first in the series so I went through 10 of them in order then finished by re-listening to the last 2. Now they are not all narrated by the same person. I believe the Mad ship series was narrated by a women, and the change really didn't hurt it. But the books where the Bastard Prince is the main focus, well there was a radical change in the accents used in this series. So to be honest I got used to the characters sounding a certain way, and in this series they were radically different. So it was harder for me to relate it the characters as well. One example is that the spy master in the series before was more Scottish, and in this series he is more Eastern European. Kind of like if Jim Dale had read the Harry Potters books with different accents for the last 2 books than he had in the previous 5.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I have been enthralled with all the books, to long to listen too in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
I have enjoyed all her books
