Story
The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

A great, amazingly researched book series! Loved it, although I think it was too much focused on the US to make it complete for me.

It is a good start of a new series. Some well defined characters and good plot twists. Great voice acting, accept for the main character’s voice, as it sounded way too old for a young adolescent. However it did not bother me too much. At the same time the story did not deserve 5 stars, because I feel that there were some storylines that were not properly introduced or developed.

With no sign of a murder weapon, and no obvious motive, Fleming realises it will fall to him to prove his friend"s innocence and solve the baffling case.

Very disappointed
Reviewed: 07-02-24
The quality of writing, the quality of the plot, the quality of the characters and the historical accuracy, were all very much below acceptably bad for a cozy murder mystery . There is absolutely no reason to listen to this, especially if you are comparing this drivel and twaddle with authors like T E Kinsey, Helena Marchmont or Matthew Costello. It is not in the same league, and should never be suggested as such Audible…!

Story
Late October 1909, and the season of ghouls and things that go bump in the night has descended on the village of Littleton Cotterell. Lady Hardcastle and her trusted lady’s maid, Florence, find themselves hosting a colorful cast of actors whose spooky moving picture, The Witch’s Downfall, is being shown to mark Halloween. But things take a macabre turn when the first night’s screening ends with a mysterious murder, and the second night with another. One by one the actors turn up dead in ways that eerily echo their film.

Next to a great narrator, back story and intelligent conversations. The writer nicely captures the lives of villagers in rural England during this period. It truly starts to develop in a great series and I’m so happy I have still some books to go.

Disappointed: a story that is both underwhelming and pointless
Reviewed: 11-02-23
I have been working in Social Media for the past 18 years, I have seen the direct and indirect influence of a lot of what the writer has collected in terms of a oral history of what it meant to be in the media and social business at a couple of companies that have made a difference and then they suddenly did not.
I have been completely underwhelmed both by the story, the writing (which as the writer was/is a journalist and editor himself) was below par and only written as an recollection of what actually happened during the dawn of social media. I really thought it should have been better, more well researched, supported by psychology or sociology instead of just putting things in historical order. I thought the book would deep dive into why things went viral, should go viral or draw lots of traffic and why it did or didn’t . The writer only skims the surface and breezes past things that would be of real interest, instead of focussing on the personal lives of characters which turn out to be only side characters of the actual story.
So many times, (literally dozens of time whilst listening to the book) I wanted to stop. But I kept keeping back to the point that the book will lead somewhere, either profound or with some very interesting conclusions… but it did not, nowhere. In my eyes this book is completely pointless and does not deserve the name Business book.

Hugh Grant tries and just manages to do it justice
Reviewed: 12-26-22
This tale of old is the foundation of everything we know and love about Christmas today.
It does not need much in assistance to be preformed,as both in delivering lines or building out characters, as the fabric of the tale is so rich, the personalities so well rounded,
Hugh Grant had a quintessential British voice and so it should be a great fit. However there was almost to no depth or change in pitch, which did make the story slightly less enjoyable.

The best of the series and an instant classic

It is a mark of a great writer when all threads of the tapestry of storylines can come together in a final book to reveal the full picture and still surprise and awe the reader. The depth and richness of the characters and world that is created by J.K. Rowling makes this a unique series that will withstand the test of time, becoming an instant classic. There are few books that have given me more pleasure to read, listen and live through the eyes of a lovable and flawed character, that will forever have a place in my heart.

Story great, journalism to skewered
Reviewed: 08-02-20
I enjoyed the idea of being as baffled by the audacity of the crime and the apparent scale and sophistication of the operations. However it becomes clear quite early on that the writer decided to start reporting on surrounding issues, which could have been a completely separate podcast series. Probably also entertaining, but now I felt the writer needed to clear his conscious as he apparently felt that by uncovering social injustice, America’s guns obsession and environmental indifference during his research, he needed to address this as well.
