Story
Eleven-year-old Jake’s life has just turned upside-down. His father was wounded in Afghanistan, and his mother is going to leave to care for him. That means Jake’s spending the summer on tiny Dewees Island with his grandmother. The island is a nature sanctuary - no cars or paved roads, no stores or restaurants. To make matters worse, Jake’s grandmother doesn’t believe in cable or the internet. Which means Jake has no cell phone, no video games...and no friends. This is going to be the worst summer ever!

Loved this sweet story. Rated a 4 because at times it was slow, probably fitting for island life. Michael Crouch (narrator) was exceptional at micro-changes in voice and tone; I almost always knew who was talking with without the character being identified.

Story
New Delhi, 3 a.m. A speeding Mercedes jumps the curb and in the blink of an eye, five people are dead. It’s a rich man’s car, but when the dust settles there is no rich man at all, just a shell-shocked servant who cannot explain the strange series of events that led to this crime. Nor can he foresee the dark drama that is about to unfold. Deftly shifting through time and perspective in contemporary India, Age of Vice is an epic, action-packed story propelled by the seductive wealth, startling corruption, and bloodthirsty violence of the Wadia family.

Too Long Throughout and Rushed Ending
Reviewed: 07-31-23
This had the makings of a good story. Character development was very good for some characters. But it took almost 20 hours.
The author used a lot of detail for many situations that in my opinion with editing it could have been many hours shorter. Then in the last hour, there was a lot of detail until the last 15 minutes and the entire ending was rushed. I am not really sure what happened at the end. I regret spending my time on this, but I usually finish what I start.
The first section is pretty strong. Good character development and story. But after this the the story loses coherence. There is repetition. Late in the book another character is introduced who tells his life story...this is painful, not emotionally for me, but how long it takes and how it meanders.
And as noted above the ending was confusing.

Could Not Finish
Reviewed: 05-04-23
Usually love Baldacci. Not sure why (or if) he wrote this one. My basic concern is that it is hard to figure out who is saying what, esp when the two women are talking by phone. And I find the story line to be very weak. Tried to return, but Audible would not take it back ... seems like Audible does not want it either.

Part One - addresses undercover work in Russia. Well plotted and captivating. - worth 5 stars
Part Two - legal thriller. Very engaging, but hard to believe this situation would ever have been brought to trial. - cut to 3 stars.
Narrator was excellent. Excellent with different accents and tonalities.

Story
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Too long and too graphic
Reviewed: 04-05-19
First, the narrator was excellent. The story was essentially good. But it took too long to reveal all. The rawness of the sex was not necessary and seemed almost pornographic. This was my first book by this author. I am not sure I will try another..

Story
On a foggy summer night, 11 people - 10 privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter - depart Martha's Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: The plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul's family. Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work?

What did you love best about Before the Fall?
The use of language; wonderful prose. The story was captivating and suspenseful. The narration was spot on. The character development led to very clear pictures of them.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
The plot was mesmerizing. The author revealed the characters in a way that kept me wondering who did it.
Which scene was your favorite?
Hard to say without using spoilers - so have nothing to reveal.
Any additional comments?
The ending was calm and not sure I liked how simply it ended. However, upon reflection (fully knowing the ending), I would have wanted to hear this story anyway. It was that well done.

Character development was exceptional for even less significant characters. The varied subplots with all of the tied up in the end.The ongoing suspense with me not sure what would happen next. I wanted to keep going to find out. And was relieved when I could breather and pause for other life activities.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not sure I had a favorite. But I truly appreciated the cunning and creativity of the main character as he persistently quested for a safe and sound resolution.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Any additional comments?
This is among the best thrillers or stories of espionage that I have listened to ... ever. I am grateful to the other reviewers before me for rating this book so highly and urging others to listen to it.
