Story
Everything my husband and I have always dreamt of has finally come true. Our new home with its open-plan kitchen and marble countertops couldn’t be further from the small, damp flat where we lived only months ago. I’d hoped this would be our fresh start, an escape from my past, but the handwritten note that arrived on our doorstep makes my blood run cold – you don’t deserve this life.

Same contrived ending as 90% of this genre - just pulling something out of a hat without foreshadowing isn’t a “twist” it’s a cop out.

Story
In 1995, six university students moved into the house at 215 Caldwell Street. Months later, one of them was found dead on the sofa the morning after their end-of-year party. His death was ruled an accident by the police. The remaining five all knew it wasn’t, and though they went on with their lives, the truth of what happened to their sixth housemate couldn’t stay buried forever. Twenty years later, all five of them arrive - lured separately under various pretenses - at Wolfheather House, a crumbling, secluded mansion on the Scottish isle of Doon.

Story
On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one. The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star. The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher. It’s a wedding for a magazine or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey. The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed.

Evocative Landscape and scenery with entertaining character development and great narration. so from that standpoint, it will hold your attention. Unfortunately the plot was lame and pretty identical to authors previous (and somewhat more effective in my opinion) book. the hurried ending was wrapped up in a nice neat totally unbelievable and out of nowhere bow. Im sick of “twists” being used for scenarios when an author miraculously reinvents a character in the final pages of a book - real twists should coax Readers throughout so that we look back on all the foreshadowing amazed - not so here - at all

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of 30-something friends from Oxford meets to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students 10 years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands - the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves. They arrive on December 30, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world. Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead.

The narration was fabulous A to Z and is probably what made the book for me...the dialogue and character development were good too...so it kept me entertained but the actual plot was both totally far fetched and totally predictable buuuut what can ya do - it was at least a nice distraction performed by lovely narrators

Avid listener here-I’ll say this...from what I’ve been reading in the genre recently (probably the last 30 listens) this was better. But that’s not a big feat by any stretch. The narration was good and the plot was engaging if not believable...at least the settings and background was original but the character development wasn’t there - bang half way through Or later, people’s personalities completely change to fit the same tired plot lines (you know the ones...women scorned, sneaky men (who evidently show their true colors decades in) and the crazy lady’s antics end up being right despite no one believing her throughout)...I mean it was fine but not deserving of 5 stars by a long shot...

If not for Julia whelan I wouldn’t have bothered to finish. There were seeds of what could have been written into a decent story here but the structure failed to deliver and instead just continuously slams you with irrational and fantastical characters...then tries to reverse course entirely in the final ten minutes. the last minute resolving twist was so out of the blue without any support or foreshadowing made it as unbelievable and unsatisfying as the entire preceding portion.

Eh. There’s a decent narrator and it’s the type of thing that may hold you attention here and there so I may be taking frustrations out on this one u fairly....but I’m starting to feel a little underestimated as a reader by some of these authors. I love a good mystery/thriller, but the more I listen to, the more I realize good ones are few and far between. at least this one didn’t stick to the dominant theme of a woman everyone thinks is crazy turning out not to be, so that’s a plus at least. But unfortunately - like so many others of the genre - it seems like the author spins a wheel for the secret never before hinted at motives after picking the villain out of a hat. I long for a little more nuance and character development :/

If it wasnt for the entertaining narration I might have quit on this one. Not a bad story just one I feel Ive read a 100 times (dont mean to spoil so feel free to stop here! but its your basic...charming Jekyll and Hide man and a naive female who eventually, finally gets her sh*t together...the end).
