Story
In 1909, Clementine steps off a train with her new husband, Winston. An angry woman emerges from the crowd to attack, shoving him in the direction of an oncoming train. Just before he stumbles, Clementine grabs him by his suit jacket. This will not be the last time Clementine Churchill will save her husband. Lady Clementine is the ferocious story of the ambitious woman beside Winston Churchill, the story of a partner who did not flinch through the sweeping darkness of war, and who would not surrender either to expectations or to enemies.

An overlooked hero whose brilliance, determination, compassion and remarkable insights certainly helped end WWII.
I love reading Benedict’s historical fiction because it leads me to read these remarkable women’s biographies.

Story
Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich"s plans while at her husband"s side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star.

Story
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

We are reading it for our book club in September and it is the perfect first book to kick off our year. Every woman who has worked outside the home especially if she started her career in the 70s or 80s will identify with each character and every sexist setback and marvel at how we got through those Mad Men days. Cheers and appreciation for this insightful, courageous book. This story needed to be told.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

But finished it and loved it. It was honest and transparent and will give the reader a kick in the pants to take risks and live life. There is a poetry and humility to every story. I will listen to it again, especially the last chapter and take notes. 2020 may have been the most consequential year in our lives.

Against the backdrop of Nazi Germany and 15th century Italy, two remarkable women emerge to show us why art matters so deeply to our souls. Researched, crafted and woven together this is a gorgeous book. Be patient with it because like a beautiful work of art, it takes time to reveal and capture the reader.

Story
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

The bravest book I have ever read
Reviewed: 10-26-19
Rowan Farrow has opened our eyes, minds and hearts to the flawed organizations and unresponsive justice systems that spin crimes of sexual assault into lies about the victims....With the rich and powerful men getting a pass for decades. First the flawed systems protect those that commit sexual assaults and then they distort the victims of these crimes into women who are crazy, not performing well, or liars. It stops now. Protect the free press. Speak up for yourself and for others. If all men would call out other men immediately when they see or hear of sexual abuse, it would end quickly.

Story
Without John C. Houbolt, a mid-level engineer at NASA, Apollo 11 would never have made it to the moon. Top NASA engineers on the project, including Werner Von Braun, strongly advocated for a single, huge spacecraft to travel to the moon, land, and return to Earth. It"s the scenario used in 1950s cartoons and horror movies about traveling to outer space. Houbolt had another idea: Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. LOR would link two spacecraft in orbit while the crafts were travelling at 3,600 miles an hour around the moon. His plan was ridiculed and considered unthinkable.

This is a terrific and little known account of a real life David and Goliath miracle at NASA. The tenacity
of John Houbolt, mid level NASA engineer, made the safe landing on the moon possible 50 years ago. This type of courage has application for anyone -
personally or professionally - who needs to step up in a daunting environment with data and conviction. I highly recommend. Well done!

Reviewed: 11-08-15
I am a writer, speaker, and a consultant. So I"ve read many books, taken many courses, and heard many authors speak. This is my favorite book and teacher in the world and like Ann Patchett, if I could give her a big hug and kiss, I too would tell her that I love her. Elizabeth Gilbert has given the world a treasure and frankly has written one of the best business books ever. Creativity is the essence of leadership and no one writes about the regenerative power of creativity like Ms. Gilbert.
