The New John Grisham?
Reviewed: 05-19-20
The writer and the book remind me of the books John Grisham wrote back in the days of "The Firm" and other earlier novels.
I highly recommend this book. The character, "David" is well done and the setting of Austin is great.
I have already added the second book in the series to my library.

It starts off good and then slows down, gets good again, and then gets bogged down. Finally, it gets into a nice pace for a long time as they go back, but then just when you think the book has come to an end it takes us down another road with characters we don't know and do not care about. I stopped listening with about 6 hours left.
It should be 2 books, but more needs to be accomplished and overall goals reviled sooner.
The performances were fantastic and characters originally well developed.
Plus the dry humor in the book worked, but just now enough meat on the bone.
I would not recommend the investment of time in this book.

Joe Mandel is a perfectly ordinary guy from a perfectly ordinary town - a college student and community volunteer who dreams of one day publishing a novel. When a series of strange intuitions leads him to a crime in progress, Joe jumps headlong into danger without hesitation. In the aftermath, he wonders about the uncanny impulse that suddenly swept over him. Until new friend Portia Montclair, the strangely wise daughter of the local police chief, explains to him what sent him ricocheting around town like a crazy pinball.

I loved what I read...but it's just a start. Fascinating characters have been invented and invested in and then the book ends.
Need more.
Great short story.

Story
American scientist Matt Miller is torn from his own century and dropped into Colonial America with nothing except a backpack. His phone, his money, and his identity are all useless and he quickly finds that he is foreign and alone in his own country. Matt must meet the challenge to survive in a newly forming society where he seemingly has no relevant skills and no one he can count on. He suspects that his 21st century knowledge of science and technology could make him a king in the New World, but he quickly finds that 18th-century America is a dynamic place where nothing is guaranteed.

Slow and missed opportunities
Reviewed: 07-11-19
The book was slow and missed opportunities to take 21st-century technology into the 1700s.
My main problem with the book is it ended without much happening in the book.
I haven't listened to the second book yet if I do at all.
The book covers too much of the day to day work life of a farmer and the family.
So much could have been done with meeting people in history or using current day knowledge in the colonial times, but very few times was this done.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

Story
Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of this country only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five.... Nothing is as it seems and everything’s fair game in this wickedly clever new novel from John Grisham, the undisputed master of the legal thriller.

Okay story....slow in the middle....okay ending
Reviewed: 12-11-12
It's still Grisham, so the writing is very good, but the story lacked action or suspense.
There was a long slow middle that really didn't seem to have a lot to do with the story.
Then when we get answers, they seem to hurry though them.
Would not recommend to read, but okay to listen to.

We know you are here, our brothers and sisters...Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost - how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers...to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies. And now, at an age when everyone is required to turn themselves over to the militia, Pressia can no longer pretend to be small.

I tried to give this a chance, but I wanted to know more about the Dome, and less about the real world....slow moving and the story was based on a small situation instead of the bigger issues. Not another "Hunger Games".

Story
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.
