Story
Viennese ideas saturate the modern world. From California architecture to Hollywood Westerns, modern advertising to shopping malls, orgasms to gender confirmation surgery, nuclear fission to fitted kitchens—every aspect of our history, science, and culture is in some way shaped by Vienna. Richard Cockett gives us the entirety of an extraordinary story of how one city made the modern world—and how we all remain inescapably Viennese.

Inadequate reader!

The content of the book is interesting but the narrator‘s voice and his lack of knowledge of the German language makes it very difficult to enjoy it. Please bring out this book with a voice of someone who actually speaks both languages. It was unbearable to listen to this one.

Story
When he was assassinated in 1896, Nasir al-Din Shah had sat on the Peacock throne for nearly half a century. A colorful, complex figure, he is frequently portrayed as indolent and self-indulgent. Yet he was in many ways an effective ruler who displayed exceptional resilience in the face of dilemmas and vulnerabilities shared by most monarchs of the Islamic world in the 19th century. In this book-the first in English about Nasir al-Din Shah, Abbas Amanat gives us both a biography of the man and an analysis of the institution of monarchy in modern Iran.

The trouble with listening to this well researched book was that the versed narrator wasn’t a native speaker. Hence, I had difficulty to understand the names, titles and functions of the different characters and everywhere else when a Persian word was used. It was hard to follow and comprehend who were the players at a given time. Please bring out this title with a narrator who knows both languages. It was unbearable to listen to this one!

Timely and multilayered!

A story of people from different cultural backgrounds and their chances in life merely based on the fact where they were born. Different perspectives are well described. Glattauer examines the struggles of many immigrants who risk everything in the hope of a better life in Europe by waving a compelling story.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Not her best oeuvre!

This was one of the least satisfying crime stories I have listened to lately. Most characters were nauseatingly annoying and left me thinking of how could anyone survive in this world with so little intellect. In order to do the story justice, I listened to the end wishing every moment, it would be over soon.

In June, 1954, eighteen-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served fifteen months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased, and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car.

What Mr. Towles does with words, sounds like poetry to me. There is a beautiful melody accompanying each word. One can’t help oneself but to see the world through the eyes of each character and sympathize with each one. I simply loved it!

Reviewed: 07-30-21
Was it intentional that the narrator’s voice sounded depressed and soulless? It was difficult to listen to the story which was well written. I recommend reading the book rather than listening to it.

I couldn’t help but think that the story was very much inspired by Jane Austin’s “ Pride & Prejudice” set in our time. The author is capable of transporting the reader to the most beautiful surroundings on our planet. Although the heroine can be annoying in her thoughts and actions sometimes but overall the story is humorous and uplifting. A modern day fairytale.
