Story
Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her unbearable life on the swamp, and to her harsh father in Mississippi. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle, so she forms a plan to go north.

Couldn't finish

The story started out well but became tedious. The narrator also made it difficult to continue with her terrible phrasing and bouncy lilt.

I loved this story of a young girl's journey from China for an arranged marriage. Though she was obedient, she retained her individuality and spunk. I highly recommend.

I had to sit down...
Reviewed: 04-19-22
I typically listen to audio books during my daily tasks. This book, in the last few chapters, I had to sit and listen intentionally. I was immersed in the story and had to give my full attention as Sophia, Zoe, and Megan wrapped up this tragic, emotional journey.
