Captured me right from the beginning!

This story and the reader had me at the edge of my seat at times desperate to hear what happens next - tempted to fast forward my audiobook just to learn the fate of the characters. Speaking of characters, they are skillfully developed throughout and the tale of war, survival, and romance is masterfully woven. I am going to listen to another Roseanna M White book immediately.

Slow start but worth reading!

I wasn’t sure when I first began listening to this book that I would like it, but now I can’t wait to read the next one. Rosalind Thorne is everything you want in a heroine - brave but humble, pretty yet seeming unaware, and very insightful and useful stumbling upon a murder mystery while having her own romantic interest.

Kind-hearted Aunt Lizzy is shocked; stern Cousin Charles and his humorless fiancée Eugenia are disapproving. With her inimitable mixture of exuberance and grace Sophy soon sets about endearing herself to her family, but finds herself increasingly drawn to her cousin. Can she really be falling in love with him, and he with her? And what of his betrothal to Eugenia?

I love this entire Mary Balogh series! This story was endearing with her many “Lady” characters, and the way the author brought us along as “Johnathan Smith” finds himself figuratively and literally.
