Story
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

In 1855, with the United States at odds over slavery, the lawyer Abraham Lincoln wrote a note to his best friend, the son of a Kentucky slaveowner. Lincoln rebuked his friend for failing to oppose slavery. But he added: “If for this you and I must differ, differ we must,” and said they would be friends forever. Throughout his life and political career, Lincoln often agreed to disagree.

Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week"s meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts" predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight.

A measurement-driven experiment was sponsored by IARPA and Tetlock and Gardner showed documented evidence that forecasts of less than three years can be accurate. Superforecasters are not the pundits, experts or talk show guests you see in the media. The techniques for good forecasting can be used by business, government, not-for-profits and others to make better decisions. The narration was good, the examples were enlightening and the concepts are useful.

Andrew Roberts" Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon"s thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.

Napoleon - Opportunist/Statesman/Military Genius
Reviewed: 10-20-15
If you could sum up Napoleon in three words, what would they be?
Ambitious, energetic, historical
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
This is a big book that tells a big story. It should be consumed in large bites over days.
Any additional comments?
Andrew Roberts writes a substantial biography of a significant figure in European history in a broadly balanced manner with a touch of pro-Bonaparte inclinations which provides a great education for a student of history. Napoleon had a significant impact on European politics, warfare and law. This book is a worthwhile review of such a significant figure in nineteenth century Europe.

He sets the record straight on the oft-made prescriptions for leaders to be honest, authentic, and modest; tell the truth; build trust; and take care of others. By calling BS on so many of the stories and myths of leadership, he gives people a more scientific look at the evidence and better information to guide their careers.

Antidote to Bromides from Leadership Gurus
Reviewed: 09-23-15
The leadership industry is full of inspirational, feel-good talk which does not match what the majority of organizational leaders look like. According to Pfeffer, most leaders act out of their own self-interest and are rarely held accountable for bad behavior. Individuals and organizations should recognize this and plan accordingly. Organizations should be made less leader-dependent, balances of power created, metrics and reward systems put in place that assume leaders act out of self-interest.
