Story
The plane is jam-packed. Every seat is taken. So of course the flight is delayed! Flight attendant Allegra Patel likes her job—she’s generally happy with her life, even if she can’t figure out why she hooks up with a man she barely speaks to—but today is her twenty-eighth birthday. She can think of plenty of things she’d rather be doing than placating a bunch of grumpy passengers.

Great book, superior narration

I read these books years ago and loved them, but was thrilled to see that they were on audible now.
Even more than that the story itself, as an avid consumer of audiobooks I’m very aware that the narrator can make or break a book, and this narrator is stellar!!

Years before the name Alex Murdaugh was splashed across every major media outlet in America, local South Carolina journalist Mandy Matney had an instinct that something wasn’t right in the Lowcountry. The powerful Murdaugh dynasty had dominated rural South Carolina for generations. No one dared to cross them.

False Advertising

I am a true crime aficionado and this is not a true crime book, it’s a book about the author who happens to be a journalist and who stumbled into reporting on the Murdaugh case.
Mandy seems to be unable to not interject herself and details of her life into a story that has nothing to do with her and it’s super off putting.
I’m all for context, but RELEVANT context, which this is not. It makes me angry for the people this book was supposed to be about.

Story
Working as a dedicated forensic psychiatrist for many years, Emma is not shocked so easily. Then she is assigned to work with Connie, a wife and mother accused of a despicable crime. Connie is suffering from dissociative amnesia - or at least seems to be. Now it is up to Emma to decide whether Connie can stand trial for her sins. But there is something about Connie that inexorably pulls Emma into her orbit. Too Close is a masterfully written riveting listen about the powerful - yet dangerous - closeness between women.

Amazing

I rarely write reviews but this book commanded my attention. It was lyrical, wonderfully surprising, and has the dry sense it humor specific to the British culture.
Both the book and narrator were the kind of amazing I wish every book and narrator were.

Love Lisa Gardner but. . .
Reviewed: 09-11-19
Okay, I could deal with the overly dramatic narrator with too much attitude than necessary but I am SO OVER the description of Flora and her “472 days in a coffin sized box” or whatever. Seriously, I actually rolled my eyes so hard they almost got stuck that way whenever the description came up (on every other page). Did she not have any other way to describe what Flora experienced?
I really do love Lisa Gardner so it just pisses me off because I just want to enjoy the book.

Love the book, can’t stand the narrator. Tolerated it because I liked the book but the narrator is super nasal and makes every character sound like they’re annoyed all of the time. Please get a new one!

Story
There is a serial killer on the loose preying on vulnerable women. The only identifiable mark the killer leaves are letters - sometimes one, sometimes two - all carved into the torsos of his victims. Together, they spell “Sydney”. When he grabs Daisy Dawson, he believes he has found his next victim. But despite her small stature, she fights back with an expertise that quickly frees her. Before fleeing the scene, Daisy also manages to grab what proves to be crucial evidence: a necklace from around the killer’s neck.

What is with the random accents?
Reviewed: 04-04-19
This book is an entertaining mix of mystery, action, and romance, but the narrator is super annoying. Not awful enough that I couldn’t listen, but it definitely took some effort to get past it. People who weren’t southern randomly had southern accents, women who weren’t valley girls inexplicably sounded like valley girls. Wtf?
Overall though, entertaining enough to try to bypass the narration.

Marianne has a life others dream of. A beautiful townhouse on the best street in the neighbourhood. Three bright children who are her pride and joy. Sometimes her past still hurts: losing her mother early, growing up in foster care. But her husband, Simon, is always there. A successful surgeon, he’s the envy of every woman they’ve ever met. Flowers, gifts, trips to France: nothing is too good for his family. Then Simon says another woman’s name. The way he lingers on it, Caroline, gives Marianne a shudder of suspicion, but she knows it’s nothing - she can’t entertain this flash of paranoia.

NOT a thriller
Reviewed: 04-02-19
I don’t think I’ve ever written a review before, but I felt it necessary for this one. Frankly I am baffled by all of the rave reviews. The only reason I gave this book 3 stars is because it was very well-written and the narrator was excellent, otherwise I was actually pretty annoyed that they call this a “psychological thriller” because it is definitely not.
The majority of the book doesn’t seem to be going anywhere and essentially is just about an abusive relationship from the perspective of a woman who is clearly very damaged. An incident happens to occur at the end but by that time I was so fed up with the main character that I really wasn’t invested anymore. I only kept listening because I wanted to see if the story was actually going anywhere. Turns out that by that time I didn’t really care.
