Story
Detective Sam Helsdown hasn’t seen his daughter Zoe in two years and he’s excited and more than a little nervous to be at the airport picking her up for a visit. She’s 10 years old and has flown on her own for the first time. Flight BA631 from Athens has already landed and soon a trickle of people begins entering Arrivals. Among them is a little girl who runs towards him, head down, and throws herself into his arms saying ‘Daddy!’. But then he looks at her properly. This is not Zoe. This is not his daughter.

Another Joy Ellis hit
Reviewed: 07-01-24
This is the first stand-alone & short story I’ve read by Joy Ellis. I’m love her style and eagerly read the 3 series she authors. Despite it being a short story she was able to hook in reader in with her shadowy ‘bad guys’, faulty ‘good guys’ and mysterious fens.

As a native Minnesotan, the narrator’s pronunciation of cities around the state made me cringe. Narration aside, the story was well written and interesting.

But after eleven years battling PTSD from his service in Afghanistan, Jason was seized by depression and suicidal thoughts. He dropped out of the mayor’s race and out of public life. And finally, he sought help.

Based on actual events that happened between 2005 and 2009 in a remote Mennonite community where more than 100 girls and women were drugged unconscious and assaulted in the night by what they were told (by the men of the colony) were "ghosts" or "demons", Miriam Toews' bold and affecting novel Women Talking is an imagined response to these real events.

While some listeners may want to make this about abortion, they are missing the bigger point Jodi is trying to drive home. Reproductive CHOICE - something men are having removed from them in the first time in their lives. I only wish she had emphasized the limitations women face with jobs (beyond promotions), housing, childcare, etc.

You may think you know this story. There's a young queen about to be married. There are some good, brave, hardy dwarfs; a castle shrouded in thorns; and a princess cursed by a witch, so rumor has it, to sleep forever. But no one is waiting for a noble prince to appear on his trusty steed here. This fairy tale is spun with a thread of dark magic, which twists and turns and glints and shines.

Story
Gideon Frayne has spent his whole working life as a policeman in the village of Dark on Bodmin Moor. His first missing-child case is eating him alive. When his own boss sends in a psychic to help with the case, he's gutted - he's a level-headed copper who doesn't believe in such things, and he can't help but think that the arrival of clairvoyant Lee Tyack is a comment on his failure to find the little girl. But Lee is hard to hate, no matter how Gideon tries. At first Lee's insights into the case make no sense, but he seems to have a window straight into Gideon's heart.

Close...but didn’t live up to hopes
Reviewed: 07-06-19
I hoped this would be a new series to pique my interest. Adding romance & sex is unnecessary and ruins the story for me. It reminded me of Outlander - with all the sexual trysts - that added nothing to the story. I finished the book, but will not read any others.
