Such a Fun Ride!

Extraordinarily well imagined story of vibrant characters anchored to a world of magical realism.
I thoroughly enjoyed this rollicking, grown up tale in which no elves, vampires, fae, werewolves or demons appear in which the only magic is the power of women.
Accomplished, propulsive writing coupled with a reading by January LaVoy, a master of the narrative arts, make the Change one of my all time favorite listens.

Story
When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes.

Story
Celebrity chef Maxwell Cavanaugh is known for many things: his multiple Michelin stars, his top-rated Culinary Channel show To the Max, and most of all his horrible temper. Hadley Beckett, host of the Culinary Channel's other top-rated show, At Home with Hadley, is beloved for her Southern charm and for making her viewers feel like family. When Max experiences a very public temper tantrum, he's sent packing to get his life in order. When he returns, career in shambles, his only chance to get back on TV and in the public's good graces is to work alongside Hadley.

Enjoyable but Predictable

I usually find Bethany Turner’s stories to be quite entertaining. This one held no surprises and brought nothing new to the genre.
Great reader though!
Still better than 90% of the (generally awful) romcoms out there because Turner can actually write.

Story
Holly Sherwin has been a struggling playwright for years, but now, after receiving a grant to develop her play Witching Night, she may finally be close to her big break. All she needs is time and space to bring her vision to life. When she stumbles across Hill House on a weekend getaway upstate, she is immediately taken in by the mansion, nearly hidden outside a remote village. It’s enormous, old, and ever-so eerie—the perfect place to develop and rehearse her play.

Terrific Production!
Reviewed: 10-21-23
Hand and Monda are my audio book dream team. Elizabeth Hand writes smart, utterly engaging stories. Carol Monda is my favorite reader and has a particular affinity for reading Hand’s outstanding novels. This work is also extraordinarily well produced; the sound effects actually enhance the storytelling. Usually, they just get in the way.
A Haunting on the Hill is the perfect continuation of the Jackson classic. I find some of my fellow reviewers’ comments that the characters are dislikable to be odd since Hill House is - and always has been- a house of illusion, manifesting and preying upon the darker parts of each character’s psyche.
This production defined creeping dread. I enjoyed every second of it.

Story
Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family's ignominious past. She thought she'd finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father's scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything.

It’s a fascinating story and extraordinarily well told.
I just wish writer/reader Jane MacSorley hadn’t inserted quite so much of herself….or maybe we needed much more. This part reportage, part incomplete personal essay just didn’t wow me. It could have.

Story
Hot-shot lawyer McKenna Keaton finds herself in hot water with her own law firm when she’s (falsely!) accused of embezzlement. Placed on unpaid leave, she suddenly finds herself with the free time to return home and attend her youngest sister’s wedding activities. But it’s not all fun and games. Waiting back home is shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna’s high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess. Scratch that. He’s Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham, North Carolina’s, darling son.

Smart and Engaging
Reviewed: 01-23-23
This novella is much more than an interesting detective story. Cat and Vivian are abused women who shut down emotionally in two very different ways. It’s a fascinating, deftly written tale about loss and the women’s attempts to regain personal autonomy that takes place over 5 days.
The audio production is excellent, with four accomplished readers but falls down a bit in one area; one of the characters is newly wounded and re wounded during the story- a choice was made to have her hesitant and a little whispery at times which is an appropriate dramatic choice, but not so good for the listener. I had to rewind more than a few times to catch what I worried might be an important plot point. Still, I heartily recommend Cat & Vivian.

….In so far as it’s an early 21st century romcom. That wasn’t meant to be backhanded; author Lily Chu has penned two of the best romcoms I’ve listened to - but - it’s - y’know- a romcom…
Chu really knows how to construct characters, tell a story and keep the reader’s interest. I’m an old lady who couldn’t possibly care any less about K-POP and yet, I stayed up late listening to the end.
One complaint: many passages seemed to be sped up. Was it necessary? Phillips Soo is an excellent reader, why not just let her do her thing?
