Story
Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

Excellent book! A well-written account of EMS’s early history. So much of this has been lost over the years, but it is as relevant today as it was back then.

Interesting Story, Terrible Narration
Reviewed: 05-10-23
The storyline was interesting, but the main character jumped to conclusions so many times it game me whiplash. I lost track of how many times she changed her mind. Definitely not a strong character, especially for a lead.
This book was definitely not “The Good House” caliber. The narrator would be much better suited for children’s books. In some of her character portrayals she sounded like Betty Boop. It was distracting and completely incongruous with the topic/plot.

Story
Folks in Moab live for ice cream socials, baseball, and the local paper’s weekly gossip column. Sheriff Winston Browne has watched over Moab with a generous eye for a decade, and by now he’s used to handling the daily dramas that keep life interesting for Moab’s quirky residents. But just after Winston receives some terrible, life-altering news, a seemingly mute runaway with no clear origin arrives in Moab. The residents do what they believe is right and take her in - until two suspicious strangers arrive and begin looking for her.
