Nice non-violent mystery with a bit of romance and lots of British culture (for this American who loved traveling through the same places as in the series 😇).

Good clean mystery
Reviewed: 11-09-24
Simple story lines with quality characters who live realistic lives but end up involved in mysterious situations, usually involving a death- but not always!
You won’t find any gruesome or violent incidents nor sex scenes or even innuendos.
You will find realistic conversations between people, some attracted to each other, some good friends, some not so good friends, and good storylines that are interesting and descriptive.

Story
This is the incredible true story of the greatest spy you’ve never heard of - as told to the author by the woman herself. At the outbreak of World War Two, Nancy Wake’s glamorous life in the South of France seemed far removed from the fighting. But when her husband was called up for military service, Nancy felt she had just as much of a duty to fight for freedom. By 1943, her fearless undercover work even in the face of personal tragedy had earned her a place on the Gestapo’s "most wanted" list.

Excellent retelling of other war heroes
Reviewed: 03-15-22
We need these stories especially in light of today’s news events that in many ways are repeating history. Will we ever learn?
World War II resistance fighters will never receive all the accolades they deserve but this story is another retelling of the sacrifices they made, of their bravery, and of their losses.
Simply reading or listening to this story will give them more of the recognition they deserve. While historical in the telling, the narrative is interesting and well worth the time spent reading/listening.

No Colorado accents used here
Reviewed: 03-05-22
I admit I’m “prejudice “ as I am a pronunciation and linguistics professor, but the narrator has NO CONCEPT of native Coloradans accent — we have NO accent and we NEVER talk through our noses!
Other than this, it is another good “chick mystery” by Maggie Sefton.
But please don’t use this narrator again!!! PLEASE!!!

Story
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

A good reminder that the “war to win all wars” was destructive and deadly, yet even good could be found.
Too bad this same story lives on today with people fighting over something that they don’t really want but think they must have, when what they truly desire is relationship and peace!!

Not a fan of narrative
Reviewed: 10-22-21
The story/plot is great or just as good as the others in the series.
But the 1st person narrative of Gentry takes something out. Can’t say exactly what it takes out but if this was the 1st book, I’d have not gotten another.
I only made it to the end to “hear how it all turned out”.

A typical Jack Ryan classic, but...
Reviewed: 12-11-20
Jack Ryan Jr. is way too sappy and emotional in all the wrong places in this story. His “attachment” to Isabel becomes more and more stupid and sappy NOT the “loving protector” the story seems to be attempting to portray.
However, I’ve read/listened to the book about 4 times and I’ll read/listen again (I read the whole series each time a new book comes out or when I want conspiracies!). Ignoring the sappy sections, the story is good!! Another great “Clancy” starring the Ryan clan!
