Wonderfully complex weaving of plot lines
Reviewed: 01-16-25
This was the best book of the 5 book series so far. So many times throughout I was speechless at the complexity he was weaving together, tying up loose ends and starting new ones. How many surprises can his sleeves hold?!!

Good Strategy/Bad Strategy

Story
Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to - and approach for - overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy”.

Best book on strategy
Reviewed: 12-10-24
I’ve read a few books on strategy now, and this one leaves them all behind. A must read for executives and those who aspire to lead others.
Mildly annoying whining sound perhaps due to the editing and compiling of the book? But that’s my only nit - a minor production blemish.
I hope the author keeps releasing new books that take in current events.

Young adult audience?

I think if I were just starting out on my epic fantasy reading I would like this. It’s clean, and quite predictable.
And Kate Reading is amazing.
But as an experienced epic fantasy reader, I have to say this was a struggle to get through at times. Definitely a noticeable notch below Sanderson or Rothfuss.
So for that reason I give it 3 stars. But my almost teenage daughter might give it more …

Story
Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there"s an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can"t have the planet, they"re sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there"s something wrong with Murderbot; it isn"t running within normal operational parameters.

When Murderbot discovers a dead body on Preservation Station, it knows it is going to have to assist station security to determine who the body is (was), how they were killed (that should be relatively straightforward, at least), and why (because apparently that matters to a lot of people - who knew?). Yes, the unthinkable is about to happen: Murderbot must voluntarily speak to humans! Again!

I didn’t get what I wanted from this book
Reviewed: 03-25-24
Chock full (perhaps too full?) of name dropping anecdotes, I felt like this was more a tour of her extensive interviews and research than a practical, insightful guide for developing EP.
In the end, it comes over as a long list of do’s and don’ts, rather than a framework or mental model which could explain the factors of EP, how they fit together, and how to develop them.
If the next version could add that, it would be a real contribution to the field.
