What a well-written book!

The author takes you on wonderful adventure. You enjoy the beauty of the outdoors and stand toe-toe against the grizzly. This is the story of a young man that had a bad thing happen to him, and how he rose above it. The author doubled as the narrator and did well.

Story
In the 1860s, Napoleon III, intent on curbing the rise of American imperialism, persuaded a young Austrian archduke and a Belgian princess to leave Europe and become the emperor and empress of Mexico. They and their entourage arrived in a Mexico ruled by terror, where revolutionary fervor was barely suppressed by French troops. When the United States, now clear of its own Civil War, aided the rebels in pushing back Maximilian’s imperial soldiers, the French army withdrew, abandoning the young couple. The regime fell apart.

The story not only provided more insight into Mexico’s history, but also of the role of imperialism. History certainly repeats itself. France’s involvement in Mexico reminds one of our involvement in Vietnam and Afghanistan; and the same result.

Story
In the summer of 1942, the Rabinowitz family narrowly escaped the Nazi ghetto in their Polish town by fleeing to the forbidding Bialowieza Forest. They miraculously survived two years in the woods—through brutal winters, Typhus outbreaks, and merciless Nazi raids—until they were liberated by the Red Army in 1944. After the war, they trekked across the Alps into Italy, where they settled as refugees before eventually immigrating to the United States.

Had to return it...
Reviewed: 07-27-22
I had to return it. The narrator was slow, but the author did not do her any favors. The story was a good story but it was buried in blandness and needless descriptors of trees, etc. Also, the author wanted us to know the name of every character; which was just too much. I just could not keep up. I kept getting lost in the droning narration and had to play back to catch what I missed. Very disappointing.

Story
1944. Physics professor Alfred Mendel and his family were trying to flee Paris when they were caught and forced onto a train, along with thousands of other Jewish families. At the other end of the long, torturous train ride, Alfred is separated from his family and sent to the men’s camp, where all of his belongings are tossed on a roaring fire. His books, his papers, his life’s work. The Nazis have no idea what they have just destroyed. And without that physical record, Alfred is one of only two people in the world with his particular knowledge. Knowledge that could start a war, or end it.

Story
When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months.

Graphic and tragic
Reviewed: 12-03-21
The story was very straight to the point, and graphic, as to what tragedies took place at Auschwitz. Have read many stories but this one told more as the author was in a position to engage directly with Mengele and witness first-hand the atrocities perpetrated in the camp. I certainly would recommend this book if you want to get a feeling as to what happened in this concentration camp. The narrator did a good job, but i could not give him a perfect score, as at times i felt as he sounded monotonous. I think it was the material. The author was a doctor and his recollection of what took place made me feel as if I were reading a doctor’s report. Very little emotion, but perhaps there was no need for emotion. The facts spoke for themselves. If you are student of WWII, this is a must read.

Story
When the famous German author Sebastian Haffner died at the age of 91 in 1999, a manuscript was discovered among his unpublished papers. The book was begun in 1939, but with the advent of World War II, Haffner had set it aside. His family made the decision to publish it, and the book became a best seller in Germany in 2002. Spanning the period from 1907 to 1933, it offers a unique perspective on how the average educated German grappled with the rise of Hitler.

The psychology of the Nazis

A great view into the manner of how a typical German citizens were turned into Nazis. Chilling when one compares the rise in nationalism then with what is happening today. We are all susceptible to losing ourselves as the typical German citizen did in the 1930s. Narration was outstanding. I highly recommend this book.
