Versatility is Glynn Stewart’s strength!
Reviewed: 09-21-24
Glynn Stewart is one of my favorite authors because he uses different voices to create different feels for different worlds. He does mostly space opera but is also great for urban fantasy. This is the first time I’ve read his weird westerns but they are as good as his other works. I am disappointed more people haven’t listened to them. I think Audible might have misclassified them as “Fiction.” They might do better as “Sci-fi & Fantasy.”

At last! Another Jonathan L. Howard novel!
Reviewed: 08-13-24
Jonathan L. Howard is one of my favorite authors, but he seems to do multiple things besides writing. I’ve read almost everything he’s written and a new book is like New Years.
A Victorian Cthulhu novel that does not fall into the easy tropes. Moves along and leaves you waiting for more!
Great voicing by Samuel Roukin who has a real mastery of accents from Mancusan to the Middle East.
Another great novel! Hope to see more soon!

I liked most of the book a lot. But anyone who would enslave a child and then use pain to coerce and dominate them is an a**hole. I really tried to take the rest of the book for what it was but I can’t get past it.

Story
After arriving on Block Island to find her birth mother, Blake Bronson becomes convinced she’s the heroine of a gothic novel—the kind that allowed her intermittent escape from a traumatic childhood. How else to explain the torrential rain, the salt-worn mansion known as White Hall, and the restless ghost purported to haunt its halls? But before Blake can discern the novel’s ending, she’s found dead, murdered in a claw-foot tub. The proprietress of White Hall stands accused.

The usual irritations associated with gothic romance. But. tempered by tropes of gothic horror. Overall, not bad. But at minimum for Thalia, obstruction of justice, withholding evidence, criminal trespass, burglary, conspiracy burglary, assault GBI (two counts), conspiracy assault, grand larceny, conspiracy grand larceny. For Sarah, conspiracy burglary, conspiracy assault, conspiracy grand larceny. For Sarah’s husband, conspiracy grand larceny.
Sorry Thalia, no partnership for you. More likely disbarment and five to ten plus. But foolishness has consequences.

Following the events in Network Effect, the Barish-Estranza corporation has sent rescue ships to a newly colonized planet in peril, as well as additional SecUnits. But if there's an ethical corporation out there, Murderbot has yet to find it, and if Barish-Estranza can't have the planet, they're sure as hell not leaving without something. If that something just happens to be an entire colony of humans, well, a free workforce is a decent runner-up prize. But there's something wrong with Murderbot; it isn't running within normal operational parameters.

I love all of Martha Wells’ books. But Murderbot and Cloud are probably my favorite characters.

A slow burn but a great novel!
Reviewed: 03-12-23
This novel is a bit of a slow burn but well worth it. At points it becomes true poetry.
I am suspicious of authors who read their own books because they often are not good at it. Christopher Buelman is not just a great author but also a great reader. And the music is done by Renaissance singers. It varies from decent to damn good.
This is one where the audio book is much better than a print copy!
