Although it took me some time to get into the book, the main character, gay, Uncle Patrick, through his CA summer taking care of his young niece & nephew who have just lost their mother and their father is in rehab, turns into an endearing story of them all learning about themselves, those they love and loved, accepting what is and finding ways to build and sustain the relationships they have. I agree with other reviewers who see Dan Levy as Patrick in a movie version !

The story, the honesty, the journey, the reflections, the humor, the education and reminder of humanness provided us as she shares her childhood of poverty along with her path to stellar acting performances we've gotten to enjoy, her struggles with and insights into perceptions and treatment of dark skinned Black women, all of this makes for an excellent read. Her narration was captivating and truly a performance -- an excellent book. I finished listening over 3 days.

Several chapters in and I have no interest to finish, plodding. Even having 3 narrators for the 3 main characters did not make it more interesting.

Maybe it's a book better read on paper; didn't keep me interested, and so many other books to read.

Mothers' impact and influence on James Baldwin, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X -- their beginnings, their drive, their husbands and children shared here. The organization was a bit challenging, maybe more so as listener, as the stories of these 3 women was interwoven throughout.

Such an important read, so much to understand, to think about, to incorporate in our lives. A good listen, but I bought a hard copy and will hopefully read it again when I can stop and think about passages.

Well narrated. Liked the characters; would have liked better character development and more happening. Liked Giver of Stars better.

Stegner's writing is so compelling -- took me a bit to get to the story -- in the beginning it's a leisurely look at what's happening around him and to himself as he's aging. A delightful read.
