I truly can't believe or reconcile with the fact that this is the same author that wrote the land. as he is getting older his jokes are getting more and more crude. there was some funny moments in the land but every single joke falls short in this book. they're so childish and sad they don't even dignify an eye roll. then there's so much social commentary because it takes place on Earth which is not needed because that's why I read fantasy books. I want to escape the nonsense. not hear an entire book on it. this author's main strength is that almost no one writes a better gaming system but all of his story is falling flat and this book is exhausting. I find myself feeling obligated to listen because I'm a fan of his other series but this one is a struggle and I might wind up being done with him

I love the story, the narration and all the twists and turns but it's the most confusing thing in the world why Morelia did absolutely nothing for this book. before either Army hurt each other she could have had a conversation with her father explaining how good the ants are how they treat their civilizations and that it was Anthony that saved the people of lyria. no she just sits by as everyone is killed feeling sorry for herself when all she has to do is say a goddamn word. she has a unique power in that her father is in charge and yet does absolutely nothing to help anyone this entire book. everything else is written fantastic and I love this series but her portions had me screaming for her to do literally anything useful and she never does

I was starting to get really upset at a main character dumping all of his points into one stat which really ticks me off in a lot of these books. eventually he does start spreading a bit and it becomes clear there are obvious benefits to what he is doing. the story is well written and the mood of the book is very sobering. it's certainly dark and realistic. I'm an army veteran and all of the military details are spot on and very realistic to how someone would act in real life. definitely give it a shot I'm on my way to get the next one

I'm disappointed in the author
Reviewed: 10-29-23
When I tell you that I started over from the beginning and listened to the previous books in anticipation for this one, perhaps you can understand my disappointment. I tried and I do mean truly tried. There are a few glaring points that I simply cannot ignore and trust me you will see the same.
I understand that it's difficult when you get to book four or 5 to maintain direction. Perhaps you never thought it would get this far. Whatever the case may be, The author a has horrible attention span. The MC makes grandiose speeches and plans about what he's going to do Then writes half of a chapter on how he partially does what he was going to, Only to be interrupted and Then spend another chapter making even more plans and speeches that contradict if not, outright change what he never even got a chance to do in the first place. He rarely follows through with anything he sets out to do and complains about not getting things done as though he can't control it. it's incredibly annoying and I wish it were the only problem with this series.
Another issue is how authors tend to recap their story for people to include people that did not listen to the series. Make it very brief and only once in the beginning, but do not lower the standards of your own book by explaining things all of the other readers understand already. This is book 4 for crying out loud. Stop giving recaps that last entire chapters. if they didn't read the others why are they reading book 4...
The last issue is somewhat difficult to explain. I'm not sure if the author knows someone named Ashley or Kelly in his real life. But they are essentially the main characters now. every possible good idea or logical decision or discovery has to be made by these two characters. The main character is constantly giving up all of his power. His subordinates disrespect him all the time. He second guesses himself and everyone else around him. I really used to enjoy the romance with kelly And now to be completely honest through the writing of this author I hate her. If he is oblivious to how he is doing this he needs to Work on his craft. Almost every interaction with kelly sets you up to despise her. The only thing saving These people is the main character. So wouldn't it make sense that anything to get him stronger she would fully support? "oh Matt you're so weird" She undermines and outright distracts him in every possible scenario. Without her he would be much stronger much more powerful and more focused.
None of the male characters get fifteen pages boasting how amazing and strong they are. Ashley gets at least 30. This author is massively confusing as well. He spends all of his time objectifying women, which fits right into place in the genre honestly. But then he does this weird thing where he gets on the soap box And starts getting all political. He is like the most perverted feminist ever. It's not even well done. He Makes the main character apologize for the silliest most nonsensical things. Just because he happens to be talking to a woman.
Lastly and only because i'm getting tired of writing this. This author follows a theme that I really can't stand behind. Where essentially instead of writing a good story They believe making their main character miserable is a way to successful writing. Literally nothing works out for the main character. spoiler alert...
the asurus Has a back story where a scientist basically gave his life to save her. In the first time in their existence she was being taught empathy and compassion Which perfectly set up an alliance in this book. Perhaps the author massively changed his mind again but he essentially wrote that out And now the potential ally is evil. You wasted all of book three by rewriting this concept. The sad thing is this isn't even the first example. I want to see a strong leader by book four making logical wise decisions. Not this bumbling moron, Doing anything and everything possible to piss me off. I am a loyal listener. I even purchased bright blade paperback since Wayne is the worst narrator to exist. I was excited because of the way this book series is not like others. I went back and listened to all of the other books And yet I can barely finish this one. I hope that somehow you can read this and understand that As a new author you can accept criticism and change. The way you're doing this is not working. Write believable characters and stop trying to preach whenever women are involved And just write a good story. Dial back the frat house sex every three seconds. Make believable strong characters both male and female and just relax. Allow the main character to grow instead of crapping on him all the time And cross your fingers I can even get through the last seven hours of this. I almost quit about ten times already And this is the longest it has taken me to finish one of your books.
Matt Needs to get every single one of his citizens to get their class. I don't understand why this isn't addressed. The earlier levels are easy to get And it's already been proven that he can use the dungeon. If he has three thousand people and every single person has their class... Even if they're non combatants He would be an absolute powerhouse. However We are on book four leading into book five and Aly Despite handling all the research doesn't have a research class or title and is presumably level 1. Barry, to my knowledge is also still low level as they never talk about his class. He spends no time working on his skills or his magic. Other siri's handle this a lot better. I have to keep pausing to take a deep breath out of frustration and push myself to finish.

I have read dozens of books in this style and genre. I understand the desire to make the world dark. But there really needs to be a better way of doing that without making all of The characters cry babies. I've read so many stories where there are a lot of bad things happening and yet the story flows. Every time Something even remotely entertaining happens. Character has to cry and debate. If the whole series was like this I would drop it

Maulkin and his Eternal allies may have just caused the apocalypse, but at least they’re doing it with style. The Voidgod is back and the Alvaren Queen is now convinced that Maulkin is the second coming of the Voidgod himself, but at least they have the totally awesome magic sword made out of the weapon that put the big bad down for a long nap last time! No wait, they don’t. The first thing Araphel did after stretching and yawning was to turn it to dust.

Either i'm not remembering how annoying the voice for the main character is or it's gotten so much worse. Main character is An ironic piece of work that is supposed to be manly and muscular yet winds up being such A wimp. I don't know if this one is written poorly or what. I wondering how I Even enjoyed the 1st 2.
side note. Malkin's power is unbalanced. mercy and asher are gods as well. Mercy has a dexterity build and can shoot arrows but that is her downside. She doesn't really have magic or strength. Asher is completely dedicated to magic but also has no strength and lacks any kind of fighting ability without magic. These are balances and limitations because of the build they selected. They make sense. Malkin Has unlimited strength which would be fine if that's all he had yet. He also has the ability to change every material around himself infinitely with no manner or staming bar to slow him. He is the ultimate crafter, the ultimate warrior and also doesn't have any stamina. Then to top it all off this should limit him and yet he has healing magic as well. His build is fine if it was just how god's operate but his companions literally show how selecting one path will limit others. He should not have healing, infinite stamina, infinite magic, the best strength in the land. It's too much even if it is cool.
