Story
Owen Foster has never wanted for anything. Then his mother shows up at his elite New Orleans boarding school cradling a bombshell: his privileged life has been funded by stolen money. After using the family business, the single largest employer in his small Louisiana town, to embezzle millions and drain the employees' retirement accounts, Owen's father vanished without a trace, leaving Owen and his mother to deal with the fallout. Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

The second novel in the wildly popular First Law Trilogy from New York Times best seller Joe Abercrombie. Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It's enough to make a torturer want to run - if he could even walk without a stick. Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory.

This series is just incredible. Everything about it is good and the narration is perfect. Col. Glokta may be the best fictional character ever. I read this trilogy a couple years back and decided to listen to it this time and I am so glad I did. Steven Pacey is the best in the business.

Story
It has been almost a decade since Duluth said good-bye to its innocence. The city creeps ever closer to the 10th anniversary of the year in which it found itself both gripped by murder and united in terror and during which the pillar of its community, DS Jonathan Stride, had his home and heart torn to ribbons by the claws of cancer. Cat Mateo, an orphan with a knack for landing on her feet, has bid farewell to a life on the streets. This once-stray teenager owes her rescue to Detective Stride, the father figure she holds close to her heart.

For me, this is the best series going. Every entry in the series is good. I particularly enjoyed “Goodbye to the Dead”. Getting to know more about Cindy and her final days while also having the Dr. Snow murder trial from back then and how it all tied together into modern day was so well done. I admit I had no clue until everything was revealed. And the narrator is great as well.

I’ve always heard about this book but after watching the movie some years ago I decided it wasn’t for me. I was wrong. I enjoyed it so much that I could not stop listening and will definitely be purchasing the next book in the series. Great characters with an insanely twisted story and a phenomenal narrator make this a 5 star experience.
