Worth the read

I really really enjoyed this book. It was entertaining the entire way through and I couldn’t stop listening. I was iffy on the narrator at first but after a chapter or two I wondered why I was iffy on it in the first place.
This book delivers a great balance of adventure, mystery, and romance and I can’t wait for the sequel. Ignore any potential bad reviews you may read because if the synopsis sounds interesting to you I promise you will enjoy this book. Definitely became an instant favorite for me.

Not bad but not amazing

If you liked the movie “Memento” then you’ll probably like this book because you never know what’s going on or why at any given time. It’s interesting, and certainly unlike anything else I’ve read, but just not for me, and I say that as a huge sci-fi/fantasy fan. After 11 hours of listening I was really hoping for a more satisfying ending but I was just left with this feeling of “so that’s it?”. And side note, for any other queer folks out there thinking of giving this a shot because you read that there’s a f/f relationship: eh....kinda. Not really. It’s implied that there’s feelings between the two but it pretty much ends right there.
Narrators were good overall, but sometimes said things with inflections that did not fit the scene.
All in all, I don’t regret purchasing the book because it was very unique, but I can’t imagine ever listening a second time around.

Great book, horrible narrator

I love Brandon Sanderson’s work, and this book is no exception. Like others have said, if you’ve read any of his other works it’s obvious that this is his first published book. However, that’s not to say this book isn’t great in its own way. He has an uncanny knack for world building and he disperses information at intervals that make it easy to pick up as you go along as opposed to throwing too much at you at once.
My ONLY problem was the narration. I would so much rather read this book than listen to it, but I bought the audio version simply because I couldn’t stand waiting all day just to read a little bit of the story in the evening. I was invested in the characters after only a few chapters and needed to know what happened next. However, the narrator makes it so hard to do. He reads with little enthusiasm and does not make any effort at all to distinguish between characters which can make it very difficult to follow along. He doesn’t even change his voice when he’s speaking as a female character which is seriously the LEAST he could do.
tl;dr: great book, needs a different narrator
