Story
Nestled in the shadow of the Appalachians is where Gwen Ashby stumbles upon the William Marshall Academy, and she's given a trial position as a literature teacher. The gothic boarding school seems trapped in time, yet it feels like home the moment Gwen arrives. She's charmed by the lovely buildings, bewitched by the eager students...and utterly seduced by the headmaster. Edwin Yorke is noble, handsome, and infuriatingly proper. But his tweedy exterior and courtly manners conceal a raw, sensual power.

Wonderful foreshadowing
Reviewed: 07-24-20
Loved the story, but it didn't need the sex. I loved the foreshadowing and did figure out the main twist before it ended but not how it was done. After I finished it, I went back and listened again to see if I could pick it all up. The sex scenes were not that great and the story really could have done without them.

It took me forever to listen to this 11 hour book. But, I wanted to get Imogen's story. It took 8 hours to get to the gook part and then with about an hour left it slowed way down again.

Way too drawn out.
Reviewed: 05-17-20
I have listened to this whole series and this one is the most drawn out of them all. Took 5 hours to establish the couple and then the climax happened more than 2 hours before the end of the book. I think about 5 hours of the text could have been edited out and the story would have flowed wonderfully. I had to force myself to finish this one and I usually love a long book.

Just did not hold my interest.

Very slow paced. No excitement, even the action scenes were boring. I did not feel invested in the characters and even forgot who some of them were from chapter to chapter. I did stick it out and finished the book hoping that it would get better. But I will not be reading or listening to the others in the series as I just don't feel the need to know how it all turns out.

Story
Lyra's story begins in the Haven Institute, a building tucked away on a private island off the coast of Florida that from a distance looks serene and even beautiful. But up close, the locked doors, military guards, and biohazard suits tell a different story. In truth Haven is a clandestine research facility where thousands of replicas, or human models, are born, raised, and observed. When a surprise attack is launched on Haven, two of its young experimental subjects - Lyra, or 24, and the boy known only as 72 - manage to escape.

Story
John Parker-Roth cannot believe that marriage is necessary for his happiness. He would far rather pursue his interest in horticulture, but if one day he should find a female who shared his passion for flowers - a level-headed, calm sort of female - he might reconsider. Certainly the lovely young woman who has just tumbled into his lap will not do, as she possesses neither of those admirable qualities. Yet Miss Margaret Peterson does have many things in her favor.

Would you try another book from Sally Mackenzie and/or Rosalind Ashford?
Yes, she is a wonderful author & makes me giggle.
How could the performance have been better?
The Narrator gave the character of Emma an annoying lisp. This character did not have this lisp in the "Naked Marquis" which is the story of Emma & Charles. I don't know why this narrator felt the need to do this, for me it distracted me from the story every time Emma had a line.
