Story
Janet Williams is practically invisible. If only she had the pluck to speak up at work, flirt with the handsome barista she sees every day, and realize how special she is. When a magical wig offers Janet a chance to shake things up, will she dare to try a bold new style? The voice in her head - flashy and fierce, with an unbridled southern drawl - tells her to go for it. And once she does, there’s no turning back.

Interesting but anti-climatic

I enjoyed this but found the ending to be lackluster. The story seemed a bit over the top so I expected a more dramatic ending.

Story
In her heralded first novel, Gloria Naylor weaves together the stories of seven women living in Brewster Place, a bleak-inner city sanctuary, creating a powerful, moving portrait of the strengths, struggles, and hopes of black women in America. Vulnerable and resilient, openhanded and openhearted, these women forge their lives in a place that in turn threatens and protects—a common prison and a shared home. Naylor renders both loving and painful human experiences with simple eloquence and uncommon intuition in this touching and unforgettable listen.

Best-selling author Samona de la Cruz has found herself on the wrong side of love. Even though she knows that loving Elliot Louis-Jacques is wrong, she has no desire to be right. There's just one problem - Elliot is in a long-term relationship with Demitri Alexander. As an openly bisexual man, Elliot has no problem with having his cake and eating it, too. When he tells Mona and Demitri that he wants both of them at the same time, all hell breaks loose. But then Elliot's ex steps into the picture and throws a monkey wrench that Mona never saw coming.

VERY Intriguing!
Reviewed: 09-21-20
This was unexpectedly great! I don't know what I was hoping for when I chose it but it exceeded it! The characters were interesting individually so when they came together it was even more so. There were enough twists & turns in the story that I was never bored! My only constructive criticism is that the narrator had a choppy cadence that was distracting at times and she sometimes forgot to use the accent that one of the characters had. Her voice is beautiful though so it wasn't unbearable even with those minor criticisms. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to more from the author! ❤🖤💚

Great continuation of the first book!
Reviewed: 08-31-20
I have been waiting for this and it was worth the wait! Great story, and I feel invested in these characters and their stories! The narrator is different from book one and I found that disappointing. Her adaptation of the character Janelle took her from cool & confident to bit whiny and annoying. That is my only complaint and though it may seem small to some, I found it worth mentioning. Definitely recommend, despite that!

Good read, but preachy
Reviewed: 08-31-20
The storyline is entertaining but towards the end it got VERY preachy. So much so that it felt like the message was being shoved down the readers throat, which wasn't necessary because the author made the point without having to do that. I definitely recommend it but be prepared to skip ahead a lot if hearing full on Bible verses and sermons isn't for you.

It was a regular New Jerusalem Gospel United Church work day for Reverend Denzelle Flowers when Veronica Washington, Keisha Jackson, and Marsha Metcalf showed up after losing their jobs on the same day, same morning, and almost at the same time. Denzelle struggled to solve that first problem. The other problem - the lovely Marsha - would be much harder to solve.

Good story, annoying character "voices"

The squeaky voices used to depict many of the women characters made this hard to listen to. The story made it worth it but it was quite annoying.
