Story
One night during his divorce, after one too many vodkas and a call with a phone-in-therapist who told him to “journal his feelings,” Matthew Fray started a blog. He needed to figure out how his ex-wife went from the eighteen-year-old college freshman who adored him to the angry woman who thought he was an asshole and left him. As he pieced together the story of his marriage and its end, Matthew began to realize a hard truth: even though he was a decent guy, he was a bad husband.

3 chapters in, he tells advice through his personal story and conveys what he did wrong through his tone, which is done REALLY well. And makes it all relatable. Also he sounds like Jerry from Rick and Morty…

No actual advice just metaphors
Reviewed: 08-26-24
4 chapters in and he’s still telling metaphorical stories about trolls and tunnels and waters and waves. Maybe I’m just not getting it or maybe it’s all superficial symbolic bull crap. James Sexton’s book is still the best one I’ve ever listened to

The first half he outlines problems but doesn’t offer any real practical solutions. The second half is a series of intriguing stories, but again doesn’t feel like he is offering any real solutions.

And it covers EVERYTHING that a manager goes through with relatable commentary and advice.

Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are the four most influential companies on the planet. Just about everyone thinks they know how they got there. Just about everyone is wrong. For all that's been written about the Four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as Scott Galloway. Instead of buying the myths these companies broadcast, Galloway asks fundamental questions.

A few chapters in. My right-brain wants to punch this guy in the face for being hyperbolas and condescending. But my left-brain realizes that he’s pretty on-the-ball and knows what he’s talking about. Hate it, OR enjoy his style and hint of sarcasm in every other line. You won’t get bored

Cherry Picking Success Stories (aka “No Duh”)
Reviewed: 09-18-20
The themes of this book are important at a superficial level. But beyond that it just feels like examples are cherry picking the obvious success stories we all already know about (Ex: Ford, Sony, Coke, Apple, etc.). Ex: The book implies being first to market is nearly always an advantage, ignoring the many examples out there that did it succeed with this strategy.
To me it would be a lot more useful to contrast this with the unsuccessful stories thereby pointing out at a more granular level what most companies do wrong vs right. It doesn’t do this nearly often enough.

I’m an Azure certified architect. This book is useless
Reviewed: 02-05-20
I’m certified as an Azure architect, having passed the AZ Fundamental, Cloud Development, and both of the Cloud Architecture exams.
If you are in IT development, infrastructure , dev ops, networking, and most other technical aspects of IT, this book is useless for you. If you are an Azure door to door salesman this book is perfect.
This book is a 5 hour long timeshare presentation . He repeats the buzz words over and over (“scalability”, “flexibility”) and cites quotes and articles praising Azure and never gets into any real meat.
Pluralsight, Udemy, and searching Azure on YouTube are far better uses of your time. Good luck to you all

Balanced, intriguing, emotional, relatable. Better than “What Happened”
Reviewed: 12-27-18
Trying not to bash Hillary Clinton but Michelle Obama just feels more real after reading both books, because she recounts events and describes how she felt and what it means to her.
You “have to” go through her growing up story before you get to the “good stuff”. But she moves it along while touching on the most impacting parts of her family. Again , you feel her emotion every step of the way .
Her recounts of the 2012 and 2016 election are every bit what I was hoping for. It’s refreshing to hear her recount of what I saw on the news, and she does NOT hide her feelings.
A perfectly balanced and well told story.
