Drawing upon 25 years of experience representing Black youth in Washington, DC’s juvenile courts, Kristin Henning confronts America’s irrational, manufactured fears of these young people and makes a powerfully compelling case that the crisis in racist American policing begins with its relationship to Black children.

This book takes a look at the harsh realities of over policing, of racial bias, and of the criminalization of youth in every way possible. It examines the long term impacts of this on our society and on our children and is a true plea to give them a chance. She give tons of vivid and real examples throughout and ends on a high note with some potential solutions and recommendations. This book has it all!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Story
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Wow, she nailed it with this story. Humor, emotion, suspense, drama in a framework that was so relatable. It has everything you need in a book. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way through. I'm not a fiction book reader but this was amazing. I think this was a good entry point for me because it is a story that we know all too well to be true and she got it right. I knew these characters, it was vivid, it was so real and if you don't know the story it is one everyone should hear. Loved it. Can't say it enough.
