Hits and misses but overall good!
Reviewed: 06-17-24
Any time I encounter an anthology, I am always expecting some hits and misses. I am also excited about being introduced to new authors. These short stories are supposed to highlight Black girls surviving the predicaments they are facing. Overall, I give this a 3.5 because more than a few of these did not have survival predicaments and a few just weren't for me. Someone else may enjoy the heck of the stories I did not enjoy and vice versa.

This was probably my least favorite because it made no sense. They didn’t have a meet-cute and it wasn’t even about them.

When I read the title and synopsis, I was so excited to get to it. This book has so much potential and I wanted to love it, but I found it to be just fine. I had to keep stopping and starting it because it was a slow burn. It really engrossed me in at first but after a while, I forced myself to push through because I was getting lost. The plot was unique and the women were well crafted, but after a while it started to feel flat. I still give it 3 stars because it was an enjoyable listen. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I stumbled across this book while looking for paired texts for the summer reading book I’m assigning my students. I’m so glad I found this. This is something they can relate to because what’s happening in the story is discussion-worthy and relatable in their language. Reminds me of The Hate U Give but it has its own identity in the social justice category. This will be added to my classroom library for my kids to devour.

Story
Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

A Quick and Fun Read!
Reviewed: 02-04-23
4.5/5 When the odds seem against you, who can you trust? This is the case with JB, Trey, and Ramon as they are viewed as suspects in the case of their murdered principal. If you are looking for a quick read that is well-written and mysterious, Promise Boys is the book you are looking for. I chose to listen to the story which was filled with a number of narrators. I love these types of audiobooks because not only does it help me keep track of who is speaking, the integration of the media and news reports made it more entertaining. This is my first time reading Nick Brooks and I plan to check out other books by him. Brooks provided each characters' perspective about what happened before, during, and after the murder at once before jumping to the next character. I appreciated that because it allowed me to learn about the character and determine if they were guilty. I did give it 4.5 stars because the ending seemed really rushed. I wish more information was given about Ms. Hall and why her pregnancy was constantly mentioned.

It took me longer than usual to get through this. I had to keep going back because I was not as engaged in this as I was with the first book. Book 2 was a bit slow for me and attempt at a love triangle and the storyline was underwhelming.
