Story
Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

interesting thoughts, but not very substantial
Reviewed: 07-25-24
the author had some interesting thoughts, and chains of reasoning, but it's not very substantial. In supporting his various Theories he likes to conveniently exclude obvious counter arguments and instead chases strawmen, then claims that those who disagree are just "angry". im not angry, i agree with many of his points, but found the arguments, lacking substance. h eloquently and therefore dangerously proposes his conclusion as the conclusion, without troubling to be very conclusive. This book would make a better discussion than a book. As an example, his insistance on imaginary human structures is entertaining and an interesting thought but half baked and needs some greater precision. Something is real when it has agency in the world. he also neglected that maize was mankind first genetic engineered organism.

Story
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

engaging, and a good story, but feels like the author skipped the last chapter.
Reviewed: 01-10-24
This book is in many ways Spartacus meets Harry Potter. Still it is a unique and engaging story in its own right. truly a hard one to put down once you start. Unfortunately the author never finished this book. I struggled for this reason whether to give it a three or four star review, I settled on four as I did really enjoy listening to the story. but I'm deeply frustrated that the author left pretty much every plot line of significance open at the end. As it's a series I expect there to be some open questions but I also expect some insights to keep me interested. As it is I'm just confused admittedly curious but really asking myself if it'll be worth going into the next book. This book was filled with delicious hints of deep intricate back story just waiting, begging to be discovered but in the end the reader is barely served a sliver of it. It felt like there should have been at least one more chapter to tie up some unfinished business.

Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to coexist peacefully as equals, without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. great continuation
Reviewed: 10-03-22
first half was a great continuation of the story the last half was a bit tough to get through if I'm being honest. I won't spoil anything but there were many times when I was thinking to myself ok ok ok I get it let's move on, and I'm normally an extremely patient lover of detailed world building (perhaps its the un-building were I have little patience) all the same if you've made it this far it is worth finishing it up.

Story
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

couldn't stop listening
Reviewed: 08-12-22
I couldn't stop listening simply well written. and if you like logic puzzles you'll love this book. I perhaps listen to too much Sci fi and fantasy stories that I can often find stories too predictable. This one was a perfect mix of not totally unpredictable imagination run wild but also never fully certain of what comes next. there is the occasional satisfaction of having "figured it out" that gives the story a strong logical foundation balanced with the occasional big surprise, to remind you that just like the real world this one has twists of fate that can change everything.

good book

i had my reservations in the beginning. I wasn't enthusiastic about the insect kinden concept but i came to find it captivating. the writting style storyline, and performance are excellent an easy journey to get list in. Any student of history/anthropology will recognize parallels to reality in the story, which I personally like in that it makes even a hugely fantastical world seem very believable. there's a couple of plot holes (mild spoiler) how could a mechanically inapt spider no matter how talented at acting impersonate a hugely talented engineer in a community of engineers without anyone noticing his sudden inability to do basic engineering or operate the simplest machines? but by in large the complex plot is well thought through and delivered

Story
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.
