I had zero idea what I was getting into with this book. I added it after seeing/hearing something about the title at work and downloaded it, forgot about it and then listened to it. I should not have waited. This book of short stories was a solid listen.

Story
On July 27, 1996, a hapless former cop turned hypervigilant security guard named Richard Jewell spotted a suspicious bag in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, the town square of the 1996 Summer Games. Inside was a bomb, the largest of its kind in FBI and ATF history. Minutes later, the bomb remotely detonated by the attacker amid a crowd of 50,000 people. But thanks to Jewell, it only killed two and wounded 111, not the hundreds who authorities estimated could have otherwise died. With the eyes of the world on Atlanta, the games continued.

I liked how we, the listener, got to know Jewell. His background, his likes and dislikes, but mostly that he was just a guy doing his job in the right place at the right time to prevent a bad situation from becoming an even worse situation. It is unfortunate that our "innocent until proven guilty" did not apply to him. He and his mom's life turned upside down because the pursuit of justice had blinders on instead on being blind and following facts and leads which may have resolved it sooner rather than later.

I heard of this book from some of my friends that have read other works of the author and so I gave it a shot, and I am glad that I did. I wasn't expecting this to be as funny as it was, his accents really sold the characters for me. I enjoyed the characters, how it was written and the main characters thought process was relatable. I recommend this book.

Story
Under the Trestle is the true story of the most compelling murder case in Virginia history. In 1980, Gina Renee Hall, a Radford University freshman, went to a Virginia Tech nightclub on a Saturday night. She was never seen again. Her abandoned car was found parked beneath a railroad trestle bridging the New River, with blood in the trunk. The investigation led police to a secluded cabin on Claytor Lake, where there was evidence of a violent attack. Former Virginia Tech football player Stephen Epperly was charged with murder, despite the fact that Gina's body was never found.

Story
There was no pattern to the murders, no common thread other than the fact that the victims were all vacationers, robbed of their possessions, and slain in seemingly random crimes. Authorities across three continents and a dozen nations had no idea they were all looking for the same man: Charles Sobhraj, aka "The Serpent". A handsome Frenchman of Vietnamese and Indian origin, Sobhraj targeted backpackers on the "hippie trail" between Europe and South Asia. A master of deception, he used his powerful intellect and considerable sex appeal to lure naive travelers into a life of crime.

He could have made better decisions in life, which we can all relate to in one way or another.
There seemed to be some victim shaming when describing at least one of the women with the free love of the time, maybe it was just how the narrator sounded when reading it, I'm not sure.

Story
In Hurricane Lizards and Plastic Squid, biologist Thor Hanson tells the remarkable story of how plants and animals are responding to climate change: adjusting, evolving, and sometimes dying out. Anole lizards have grown larger toe pads, to grip more tightly in frequent hurricanes. Warm waters cause the development of Humboldt squid to alter so dramatically that fishermen mistake them for different species. Brown pelicans move north, and long-spined sea urchins south, to find cooler homes.

I was about two hours from finishing this book and realized how much I enjoyed this book and the facts, not just about global climate change but how the author brought in how closely related everything on Earth actually is tp each other
I rnded up going to the closest book store and purchasing the last hardcover copy they had in stock. I haven't bought a new physical book in a long time.
Keep up the good work, and thank you for writing this book.

Story
What won't we try in our quest for perfect health, beauty, and the fountain of youth? Well, just imagine a time when doctors prescribed morphine for crying infants. When liquefied gold was touted as immortality in a glass. And when strychnine - yes, that strychnine, the one used in rat poison - was dosed like Viagra. Looking back with fascination, horror, and not a little dash of dark, knowing humor, Quackery recounts the lively, at times unbelievable, history of medical misfires and malpractices.

Highly educational without making it boring. Listening to the Pain Index descriptions is highly amusing. One of them compares the pain of a sting to stepping on a Lego in the middle of the night, something many of us can relate to.
Well worth the time and credit/payment.

Story
It was a crime that shocked the nation: the brutal murder in Chicago in 1924 of a child by two wealthy college students who killed solely for the thrill of the experience. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were intellectuals - too smart, they believed, for the police to catch them. When they were apprehended, state's attorney Robert Crowe was certain that no defense could save the ruthless killers from the gallows.

Good book, reader could be annoying.
Reviewed: 03-17-22
If you can be as easily distracted as I can then this may not be the best narrator for you. I noticed early on that he sometimes sucks his teeth (you'll know what I mean when you listen to it) and for me that was a distraction and an annoyance. If you're able to ignore it/suffer through it then he does really well at reading the story. He doesn't do the different voices for characters, which I liked, but he does something with his speech pattern that I did enjoy. He annoyed me when he should and was completely believable at some of the characters he spoke as.
Good listen, be mindful of the teeth sucking.

It was interesting to get the family's perspective on this.
OJ's words are of a typical victim shaming person where he,OJ, paints himself in this better than thou picture and blames Nicole for everything. it is hard for her to defend or dispute what was said because she was murdered.
interesting listen, from the words of a killer... in my opinion.
