Story
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Most inept main character
Reviewed: 11-20-24
There were a few times I almost gave up on this book. The main character is hard to root for, he has almost no common sense in most of the book. The story itself was interesting from about half way through the book until the end. I liked the ending so I'm going to give book 2 a chance.

Story
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

A little different
Reviewed: 11-14-24
I am not a fan of changing readers, but as the book went on I did get used to the new person. Part of the problem with this book is Gamache seemed a bit out of character, adding that with the new reader and this book seemed off. I did enjoy it overall.

Anti Police Procedure
Reviewed: 07-11-24
There is no way these police officers would do the things they do. Have they never heard of DNA or preserving evidence on people? The main female character talks in circles and either repeats her partner or just talks for the sake of talking. The story is interesting but the characters are really annoying and unrealistic. I'm also not a fan of the reader, a little too robotic.

The narrator is just too much

I just can't listen to anymore with this narrator. She'll say the same word two different ways in the same sentence. She goes from normal reading to robotic way too often. It takes away from the story.

Story
A tough special agent with the Department of Justice and a dedicated single mother to her orphaned nephews, Samantha Chase is unbreakable. Until two women, both from the shadows of Sam's past, are discovered strangled. For Sam, the most unnerving detail is the eucalyptus branch tucked behind the victims' ears - the signature of a notorious serial murderer already convicted and executed for his crimes.

Knowing only a dangerous serial killer would arrange a scene so carefully, Morgan is in a race against time to stop them before more innocent lives are lost.

Morgan would have been kicked off a real police force by now if this was real life. You can listen to the first and last chapters to get the gist of the serial killer story. The only reason I've stayed with these books is the characters. The back stories are so much better than the non stop serial killers always after Morgan.

When the body of a teenage girl is found in Rydal Falls’ churchyard, Detective Morgan Brookes abandons her own birthday to attend the scene. In the dim evening light, Morgan can just make out the girl wrapped in a pristine white sheet and is certain she’s been left here for them to find. The autopsy identifies the girl as 16-year-old Shea Wilkinson, and Morgan’s heart cracks with sorrow. The beautiful teenager has been missing for weeks; could she have been suffering all this time?

Not the greatest of endings, though the book was more exciting than most of the others in the series. Should have had one more chapter to explain deeper into the regular storyline.

Jeesh, getting repetitive
Reviewed: 05-27-23
All three books in this series ended in almost the exact same way. This is starting to get repetitive. Plus, it literally stole scenes out of a movie Morgan says she really enjoyed. I really hope the books get a little more realistic soon. It's getting to the point where Morgan is better than the police detectives who were there before her. Should be a team, not just the same thing over and over.

How could the DNA of someone who has been locked up for over 20 years have shown up in Morgan’s crime scene? And then they make another close match - to Morgan herself.

These stories all seem a bit unbelievable, but if you realize that going in, then they are still worth listening to. Especially so because the reader does an amazing job. I plan on continuing with the series since I really enjoy the characters.
