Story
It’s been an enjoyable and murder-free time for Judith, Suzie and Becks since the events of last year. The most exciting thing on the horizon is the upcoming wedding of Marlow grandee, Sir Peter Bailey, to his nurse, Jenny Page. Sir Peter is having a party at his grand mansion on the river Thames the day before the wedding, and Judith and Co. are looking forward to a bit of free champagne. But during the soiree, there’s a crash from inside the house, and when the Marlow Murder Club rush to investigate, they are shocked to find the groom-to-be crushed to death in his study.

A bit disappointing
Reviewed: 08-14-24
In this second book of the Marlowe series, I found that the protagonists had become caricatures instead of multifaceted humans. The mystery was interesting with a lot of red herrings along the way, but I had a tough time getting past the stereotypes of the three main women characters.

Hidden beneath her British reserve, Edwina has a secret: she’s finished her novel and is bravely mailing the manuscript to a publisher. Beryl also has a secret: as thanks for solving a case, the American adventuress has been gifted an airplane. After swooping over the fields and hedgerows of Walmsley Parva, livestock scattering beneath her, she flamboyantly lands the plane on the village green, prompting a startled Edwina to consider a stiff gin fizz. Beryl’s aircraft is not the only disruption of village peace. Miss Dinsdale, a psychic medium, has started holding séances.

Story
Mildred Lathbury is a clergyman's daughter and a mild-mannered spinster in 1950s England. She is one of those excellent women - the smart, supportive, repressed women whom men take for granted. As Mildred gets embroiled in the lives of her new neighbors - anthropologist Helena Napier; Helen's handsome, dashing husband, Rocky; and Julian Malory, the vicar next door - the novel presents a series of snapshots of human life as actually, and pluckily, lived.

I hadn’t read anything by Barbara Pam before, and was delighted that this came as an audible recommendation.
I can see why critics have called her the Jane Austen of her time. Very well-drawn characters that I felt like I knew by the end of the book.

What if Mary Bennet’s life took a different path from that laid out for her in Pride and Prejudice? What if the frustrated intellectual of the Bennet family, the marginalized middle daughter, the plain girl who takes refuge in her books, eventually found the fulfillment enjoyed by her prettier, more confident sisters? This is the plot of The Other Bennet Sister, a debut novel with exactly the affection and authority to satisfy Austen fans.

Enjoyable yet too long
Reviewed: 11-01-23
I enjoyed this story if Mary Bennett, the middle of the 5 sisters and thought the author did a very nice job of capturing the Austen feel.
However, the first half of the book is, at times, distinctly too long and needed to be cut in half.
The narrator is easy to listen to, and was a good choice for this piece.

It seems the palace hides an extraordinary secret...one that somebody is willing to kill to keep.

It took a while for this Stewart story to get started, but once it did it was a fun mystery in an unusual setting.
I truly enjoyed Ellie Heydon’s narration. She masters the art of keeping the story interesting and moving without trying to act all the characters. I will be looking for more books narrated by her.

Good story, so-so narrator
Reviewed: 06-11-23
The story: another good story by Mary Stewart. A quick listen and I really enjoy her descriptions.
The narrator: there is a fine line between bringing characters to life yet still narrating the story so it can be understood. While much of Ms. Bond’s narration is fine, I found some of her characters’ accents very difficult to understand. That gets in the way of truly enjoying the story. I will need to get a copy of the book to read what the narrator mucked up.

I read many of Mary Stewart’s books years ago and am happy to now be able to listen to them. I thought the narration was very well done. Stewart’s descriptions of scenery and places is wonderful; I appreciate it now much more than when I first read her books. Definitely worth listening to again and again.
