Story
I have loved Millie Wild for more than eight years. Since that summer long ago when we were inseparable, stealing moments, keeping our love a secret. And my girl has hated me for just as long. When my father found out about my love for Millie, the daughter of the rival family next door to us, he threatened everything I love the most if I didn’t let her go. My father didn’t give idle threats. I had to hurt her to save her. And for eight long years, I stayed away. But now, my father is dead and buried.

Author is great but not these books
Reviewed: 12-19-24
The plot of all 3 books is that the h and H aren’t honest with each other. Like ridiculous levels of emotional immaturity. I love other Marie James books so I kept reading. But I started skipping 5 chapters at a time and nothing had happened. The h and H were still having the same endless inner monologues about how the other person doesn’t understand what they feel (because they’ve never said anything). The narrators had great voices but the women were all petulant and whiney and stubborn in an emotionally immature way - and that wasn’t all because of the writing. The narrator could have made it sound like the women were teasing or playing instead of being bratty.

Female narrator is a problem
Reviewed: 11-25-24
What a strange, jerky, inflectionless speech pattern. I mostly could deal but when the female narrator in her weird robot voice read a quote that the character screamed, well it was rough. The male narrator is great - the kind where you forget it’s a narrator and not the character talking to you. I liked this series because I like the older characters. And I like how the people are truly good but definitely flawed. I also like the depictions of the aftermath of trauma. Sadly for me these aren’t really romantic suspense. Terrible things happen to g the he people but they’re not involved in the resolution.

I should have known everything was going to change when she walked into my tattoo shop... Timid as hell and gorgeous to the extreme. I knew better than even thinking about touching a woman like that. My life is dangerous. My calling wicked. Willing to cross any line to protect the innocent. I thought I’d never see her again until my little boy tumbled and busted his lip, and I found her working at the doctor’s office. The woman who’d taken possession of my thoughts. When it becomes clear she’s in trouble, I offer up a deal.

Uses 3 metaphors for every description. I had to keep skipping forward to get through the repetitive inner dialogue. It’s a shame bc I like the story and the characters. Other people might like this writing style, just not me.

Harmon Keyes lives by a singular motto: Family first, justice for all. It’s the creed that sustained him when he left special forces and started an ex-military motorcycle club. There, his creed drove him to put his unique skills to good use righting the wrongs left unpunished by the law. Justice for all. Daria is his ticket to vengeance, and her innocent nature makes her the perfect pawn in his revenge.

I started hitting skip. I got the point 3 chapters ago but the characters are explaining yet again in their heads that they are star-crossed, their love is impossible. The actual plot is super interesting. The Robin Hood links are clever. So I’m hoping that she found an aggressive editor for her other books.

A 3 compared to other KA books
Reviewed: 10-02-24
For me, KA stands out because of her characters. The plots are interesting but I can imagine other authors coming up with them. Not the people. KA is amazing at creating interesting, complex, likable, imperfect people. And showing you who they are through their behavior which is a more immersive experience than if the people are described to you endlessly. The characters in this book were up to KA’s usual standard so I’m really just giving it a 3 because I can’t help comparing it to my fave KA books. In some of the Colorado mtn books, the chaos mc series, and rock chicks there are scences that make me swoon, make me burst out laughing - scenes I have bookmarked and have replayed dozens of times. For me, this book didn’t have the flashes of brilliance. But please do read for yourself. Just don’t stop at this one if you are new to KA.

I met him, the man of my dreams. On the worst day of my life. Catching my boyfriend out was bad. Coming out of the club in a daze, I stumbled upon a situation which was worse. Much worse. And it would have been deadly, too. If he wasn’t there to save me. My unsuspecting hero. He was rugged, wild, and powerful. The way he looked at me set me on fire.

I read the first 6 chapters, a few in the middle, and when I still hated it - I read the end. So I probably read 50%. The heroine says ‘I have to get out of here’ repeatedly as her inner monologue- long after it’s been established she’s in danger. Then she starts telling the bad guys to go to h*ll. Yep. Like they are school bullies and a teacher is going to step in any minute. She eventually tries to fight but before and after there’s just a whole lot of inanity. The narrators were good. I’m leaving this review as a reminder to myself to not read this author again.

The male narrator was distracting. Did he desperately need a nap the whole time he was recording? The fmc was the idiot kind of virgin. So naive that her stupidity drove the plot. But she was very very kind. There were lots of adult scenes which I would have thought were good except that I wasn’t invested in either of the main characters. The family is interesting so I might try the next book in the series but not if it has the same male narrator.

I’m not a survivor of SA. And I read a lot of mafia/dark romance. And I’ve enjoyed the other books in this series and the related ones. But I’m really disturbed by this story. It very much the story some men tell of their sa survivors. She liked it. She responded. Getting aroused can happen and it’s still sa. Before this, I was willing to see the brothers as complicated rather than evil. But this book feels like horror not romance.

The first letter arrived the day my husband was buried. It was postmarked from the state penitentiary, and contained a single sentence: I’ll wait forever if I have to. It was signed by Dante, a man I didn’t know. Out of simple curiosity, I wrote back to ask him what exactly he was waiting for. His reply? You.
