It's a great stand alond story, while giving us further insight into the world of the Ancillary series.

We have an excellent cast of characters.

The story explores themes of belonging. Identity, what that means to you, and what that means to the people around you. The importance if doing what you can, even when you can't do very much. And what it means to heal.

The book is well written and well paced, with a compelling cast of characters. The world the story takes place in is very interesting.

But it isn’t a light or fun read. The tone is somber throughout.

I absolutely love this book! It's Poetic and poignant. I've laughed, I've cried, I've jumped for joy, and gone tense with apprehension.

This book is amazing! It's a fascinating look at human nature, and bodily autonomy. All the characters are unique and compelling. The world building is fabulous!

That being said there are three rape scenes, that will probably be triggering to some readers/listeners. All three are genuinely disturbing. And the narative never really acknowledges just how horrible the actions of the perpetrators are.

The themes of the book are very intriguing. But the author's desire (whether conscious or subconscious) to prove the correctness of his religious world view, makes many of the characters behave in ways that directly contradict their characterisation.

Brandon Sanderson has clearly done a lot of research on mental health, and ancient societies. I just wish he'd put as much effort into researching the philosophy around the central themes of this book. Doing so would have given this book depth and nuance. But instead Sanderson has obviously assumed that he already knew everything he needed to know thanks to his Mormon background.

This is a very good fantasy book. With interesting characters and detailed realistic and intriguing world building. But it is also very rigid and one note when it comes to the over arching philosophy of the book.
