Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

This is great sci fi. So much sci that you sometimes forget it’s fi. Makes you feel like every step throughout the story is actually possible.

Story
On the Warrior’s Path connects the martial arts with this larger perspective, merging subtle philosophies with no-holds-barred competition, Nietzsche with Bruce Lee, radical Taoism and Buddhism with the Star Wars Trilogy, traditional martial arts with basketball and American Indian culture. At the center of all these phenomena is the warrior. Though this archetype seems to manifest contradictory values, author Daniele Bolelli describes the heart of this tension: how the training of martial technique leads to a renunciation of violence, and how overcoming fear leads to a unique freedom.

Finds the balance

I only would have preferred to hear Daniele narrate the book himself because I’m a fan of his podcast History on Fire, but that aside this book is well worth the time. In true Daniele and daoist style, this book could have fallen prey to being an over indulgent and wordy exploration of the philosophical and mystical martial arts, or to presenting martial arts as a simplistic cure all. This book avoids both pitfalls but also takes the best from each of those approaches to make a thought provoking exploration that is grounded in reality and humour.

Story
A paradigm-shifting book in the vein of Sapiens that brings a crucial Indigenous perspective to historical and cultural issues of history, education, money, power, and sustainability - and offers a new template for living. As an indigenous person, Tyson Yunkaporta looks at global systems from a unique perspective, one tied to the natural and spiritual world. In considering how contemporary life diverges from the pattern of creation, he raises important questions. How does this affect us? How can we do things differently?

Listen, don’t read

Audible is probably the best platform for this ‘book’/solid state yarn. It’s unlike any other literary work I’ve read or listened to. It’s uniquely Australian and there are far deeper ways of knowing and philosophy that I have been trying to tell people are the keys to actually living sustainably for the whole world. Tyson Yunkaporta does an amazing job of weaving different ideas together cohesively. Hopefully we can all act our way into a new way of thinking.

Story
The social contract shapes everything: our political institutions, legal systems and material conditions, but also the organisation of family and community, our well-being, relationships and life prospects. But accelerating changes in technology, demography and climate will reshape our world in ways many of us have yet to grasp. In this landmark study, Minouche Shafik, director of the London School of Economics, draws on evidence from across the globe to identify the key principles every society must adopt if it is to meet the challenges of the coming century.

I would give it 6 stars if I could. This is a great example of synthesising a wide variety of research and experiences in order to create a new way forward. It’s also deeply rooted in understanding where we’ve come from and where we are. In that sense, this book can function as a realistic bridge from what was, to what can or will be.

Story
Most of us have instinctive evidence the world is ending - balmy December days, face-to-face conversation replaced with heads-to-screens zomboidism, a world at constant war, a political system in disarray. We hear some myths and lies so frequently that they feel like truths: Civilization is humankind’s greatest accomplishment. Progress is undeniable. Count your blessings. You’re lucky to be alive here and now. Civilized to Death counters the idea that progress is inherently good, arguing that the "progress" defining our age is analogous to an advancing disease.

The one negative review I have seen was written by someone who clearly hadn’t made it to the first chapter because Chris patiently and eloquently walks through all possible angles and perceptions of what he is discussing. This is a great book for our current crossroads and important listening/reading for locusts and grasshoppers alike.

A personal celebration of female friendships - the good, the bad and the complicated - by lifestyle content creator Lily Pebbles. If there's one piece of invaluable advice for women and girls of all ages, it is that there is nothing more important than creating and maintaining strong, positive and happy friendships with other women. A well written account of female friendships, intertwined with personal experience and helpful tips for both being a good friend and understanding the different types of female friendships. Well done Lily, I highly recommend this book and it is very easy to listen to.
